Seven-piece American indie rock, post rock band Racing Mount Pleasant walk an easy line from Black Country, New Road to the Mountain Goats, Radiohead to Broken Social Scene, Sigur Rós to Pavement. They draw you into their immersive musical world of complex, sometimes heavily contrasting themes: simple joy and catharsis rides atop intricate instrumental arrangements and time signatures, softer sounds build up to climactic crescendos, placeably Gen Z themes are sung over timeless music, as 300 of us descended into a hot, hot Garrison on the coldest day of the year so far.
I went down to the Garrison with Toronto photographer Owen Forbes, friend of the show and occasional fellow-concert reviewer, on Tuesday, 20 January to catch an exceptional set by Racing Mount Pleasant. Here's what we thought of it.
