  • Tech Nation - Life in the Technology Age
11/13/1993 - Life in the Technology Age
Dr. Moira Gunn speaks with Tony Smith, author of "Parzival's Briefcase
-- Six Practices and a New Philosophy for Healthy Organizational
Change." Through the medieval legend of the knight Parzival, Dr. Smith
likens our journeys in the technology age to the difficulties of
Parzival's search for the Holy Grail. They discuss the nature of
technology organizations and maintaining your personal balance in
    these times of rapid change.
Moira also speaks with Michael Heim. A classical philosopher, he looks
at the attraction which forms of technology, including word processors
and computers, have to humans. They discuss his book, "The Metaphysics
of Virtual Reality," examing how people can distinguish between
    Virtual Reality ... and Reality.

  • Geek of the Week - Mike Schwartz
    02/23/1994 - Mike Schwartz
Carl Malamud interviews Mike Schwartz, widely regarded as one of the
most influential of the researchers working in the area known as
resource discovery. Mike talks about netfind, his flexible,
non-centralized white pages tool and about several other of his
research efforts that attempt to measure empirically the types of
services used and the nature of growth on the Internet, as well as his
thoughts on how we will find information in a multi-protocol,
    multi-country, multi-purpose Internet.
This interview was originally released by mistake on January 5 when we
were "off the air." We forgot to notify our handy-dandy spooling
script that we were on a break and it grabbed this file and sent it
out into the stratosphere. Since many of you took us at our word that
we weren't shoving data into the network, we wanted to release this
interview since Schwartz is certainly one of the more fascinating
    Geeks we've seen.

  • Tech Nation - Danger from Power Lines and Growth Hormones
11/06/1993 - Danger from Power Lines and Growth Hormones
Dr. Moira Gunn speaks with Paul Brodeur, author of "The Great
Power-Line Cover-Up ... How the Utilities and the Government Are
Trying to Hide the Cancer Hazards Posed by Electromagnetic Fields,"
They discuss the basic reasons why this exposure is unhealthy, the
problems that have been found, and the groundswell of citizen response
to the severity of the problem. Of special interest is the unfortunate
location of many schools in the United States near power lines due to
the fact that such land is the most affordable.
Moira also speaks with Dr. Neil Schulman, author of "Understanding
Growth Hormone ... New Discoveries to Help Very Short Children ... Are
They Also the Fountain of Youth?" The background on how this drug came
to be developed and the strict guidelines for the treatments are
    discussed.
Additionally, Moira speaks with Brent Carney and his mother, Mary Ann.
Through daily injections, Brent has been undergoing growth hormone
replacement therapy for three years. He describes his experience with
the drug, while his mother Mary Ann discusses how the family came to
the decision to proceed with therapy.

from network management to multimedia. He discusses the challenges in
implementing standards and tells us where he sees multimedia going
    over the next few years.

  • Tech Nation - Just the Fax, Ma'am
    11/05/1993 - Just the Fax, Ma'am
Dr. Moira Gunn speaks with Carl Malamud, head of the Internet
Multicasting Service, and Marshall Rose, of Dover Beach Consulting, on
the new service which they have set up to enable faxing over the
Internet global communications network. You may say, "So what?" ...
[ Ed. 184 bytes of hype deleted ;-]
Moira also speaks with Don Peppers. With Martha Rogers, he is author
of the book, "The One-To-One Future." The trend of mass marketing is
no more -- with modern technology, the hope to "hit" some portion of
the masses is fast being replaced by the ability to market to
individuals. Innovative new use of the fax, and the orientation to
uniquely identify each customer are discussed, along with attendant
    privacy issues

Associates. Dougherty talks about publishing standards such as SGML

  • Tech Nation - Nintendo and Fuzzy Thinking
10/30/1993 - Nintendo and Fuzzy Thinking
Dr. Moira Gunn speaks with David Sheff, author of "Game Over--Nintendo
Zapped an American Industry, Captured Your Dollars, and Enslaved Your
Children." He discusses how and why Nintendo appeals to our youth, as
well as how the video game industry started in America. While the
American companies remained in disarray, the Japanese company,
Nintendo, captured the market. Listeners will learn about the
all-encompasing marketing plan of Nintendo and the myriad of lawsuits
which have been brought in an attempt to break its hold.
Moira also speaks with Bart Kosko, a professor at the University of
Southern California. His article on Fuzzy Logic appeared in the July,
1993 issue of Scientific American. Dr. Kosko expands on the theory of
Fuzzy Logic, relating it to all of Western philosophy and thinking,
and discusses why it is important that anyone other than scientists
should know about fuzzy logic. He is the author of the new book "Fuzzy
Thinking--The New Science of Fuzzy Logic."

Advanced Research Projects Agency. ARPA has a long distinguished
history of appointing Internet-aware program managers to fund research
in the field of networking, including such leading lights as Paul
Mockapetris and Vinton Cerf. St. Johns continues this distinguished
tradition and talks about current research directions at ARPA in areas

an intelligent transmission, and how we would respond. The problems
with the Mars Observer and the Hubble Space Telescope are also
    touched upon.
Moira also speaks with Hal Harvey, Executive Director of the Energy
Foundation. How energy relates to all the other environmental concerns
and national vs. international energy policies are discussed. The
self-funding proposals of the Energy Foundation, to provide incentives
to reduce gasoline consumption and to increase the efficiency of
    refrigeration, are introduced.
