Examining human bonds with high-tech art

"Programming, opensource software have opened a new window for designers and artists. It's highly changeable, and it interacts with everything around it, air, humidity, temperature, nature, human. My computer is my work partner."A graduate from Tisch School of Arts at New York University and a professor of IMA at New York University Shanghai,Liu features audiovisual and interactive installations to coding art, from digital art to printmaking and artist books in her art work to seek the deeper meanings among human beings, between human beings and nature, and between nature and technology.

In one of her work "Social Clinic," she gives prescriptions like "talk to your loved ones," "say hello and save me from my phone," "talk to me, just do it" in a "Social Clinic" diagnosis.

She believes that art with data and algorithms gives people infinite possibilities, and awakens a higher level of thinking about ourselves and the world around us, especially during tough times like the COVID-19 pandemic.

"When we were at the darkest hour of this world, may it be a song, a painting, or an artistically interactive experience, these things can prompt us to think, to feel, to meditate," Liu said.

In the first part of Liu's conversation with us, she shares with us her ideas about how human beings interact with society around us.

“编程作为一个艺术工具，给艺术家和设计师打开了一个新的窗口，可变量，也可以跟周边的万事万物进行交互：空气、湿度、温度、自然、人类。我的合作伙伴就是我的电脑。”刘唱说道。刘唱曾先后学习于普拉特艺术学院以及纽约大学Tisch艺术学院，并于2016年在纽约大学Tisch艺术学院，交互通讯学院(ITP)取得硕士学位。现任教于上海纽约大学交互媒体艺术系(IMA)。她的作品运用了多媒体交互艺术、编程、新颖材料打印技术、艺术家书等等的形式和方式去探索人与人之间、人与自然、和自然与科技之间的关系。

她的作品"Social Clinic”中，她运用科技和表演的形式给参与者写了一些社会性诊断书，其中内容包括“与你爱的人交谈”、“跟我打招呼，把我从我的手机中拯救出来”、甚至“跟我聊天就好了”，目的是为了让人们产生面对面的交流，并让人们对自己的行为通过她的艺术装置而做出一些改变，哪怕再微小。

刘唱相信艺术和编程可以带给人们无限可能，并且呼吁大家去引发对我们周围的世界更深层次的思考，特别是在疫情时期。

“我们当处于这个世界上至暗时刻，或许就是一段音乐，一件艺术作品，一个参与式的交互体验，它能够让你产生一种冥想，一种感受”。
