  • Buscando Guayaba - Cuatro cover
Salsa has many currents and diverse representatives, each with their own style and impact on different segments of the population. However, there are those who manage to reach a much broader audience, breaking through regular segmentations.
One of those who achieved the greatest reach is **Rubén Blades**, a Panamanian singer-songwriter who has become a true milestone within Caribbean music.
While his primary achievement is having created a type of "social salsa," where he touches on the most common themes and problems of Latin American neighborhoods, he doesn't always limit himself to that kind of content; he has also written many songs that are closer to the "flaws" of the Latino man.
*Buscando Guayaba* is one of them, and it refers to the search for "that certain something" that only a woman can offer. This song was an absolute boom and one of the great mega-hits from the **Rubén Blades - Willie Colón** duo.
It is a song that, even after almost 50 years, remains a mandatory track in the salsa repertoire of any DJ or dance orchestra.
Today, for a change, I am reviving this song once again, but this time accompanied only by the *cuatro*. I've included the "mouth solo"—though not the original one, as I don't know it by heart—but I didn't want to leave it out. Definitely, the hardest part is performing both the chorus and the *soneos* (improvisations) alone, but I had enough breath to make it to the end, which is a good sign... 😁
    I hope you enjoy it!
    ![Buscando Guayaba](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/ylich/23uQmzQGnbXAdanHotqtq4xdzmZ2BsmkERpF9bgyL917qETxCGXGmZmVcnMA7iDvZqMhx.jpg)
    ¡Espero que la disfruten!

  • Montila - rhythm from Lara [Eng-Esp]
General **José Rafael Montilla** was a well-known caudillo who opposed Cipriano Castro, the president of Venezuela from 1899 to 1908. Known as "El Tigre de Guaitó" (The Tiger of Guaitó), he became a legend as a daring and brave military figure. Although I only know this particular song dedicated to him, it is said that numerous *corridos* were composed in his honor.
This song, which belongs to Venezuelan folklore, was collected by José León Tapia and popularized by the wonderful voice of our singer **Lilia Vera**, one of the greatest exponents of traditional Venezuelan music.
It is a *golpe tocuyano*, one of the rhythms from Lara and, therefore, one of the musical forms of what is known as the Musical State of Venezuela: Lara.
Although I have accompanied countless other singers as a musician in the performance of this piece, this is the first time I have sung it myself. It is a song I have always liked because of its expressive power.
    ![Montilla.webp](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/ylich/243zi9m4xaw9y2tC51jpZ1dUzQU8SyrDjQJ5tjfr5WBthisDKsd2ZyC1EK2XyafaUv2RE.webp)

    ![cafe02.webp](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/ylich/EpnCNRE6SryVB28cehH36Umxwg92E1ZMcnxp3wkAwEnzEyamtVnp1TAomAuNw9NFKFp.webp)
In July of last year, I wrote a [post](https://peakd.com/hive-167922/@ylich/work-coffee-hpud-trabajo-caf-y-hpud-7ay) mentioning a project I was collaborating on, noting that it was related to coffee. It is a project by **José Moreno**, a coffee entrepreneur with a very unique vision for the business.
For him, a coffee project cannot exist without being linked to the traditions of each region. Moreno explained that the first place coffee arrived in Venezuela was what we now know as Bolívar State, specifically the El Callao area. For this reason, the first part of his work focused on highlighting that piece of history. To tell that story, he sought out prominent musicians from that region to perform a *calypso*, which is the traditional music of the area. It’s worth clarifying for those unfamiliar with our musical styles that Venezuelan calypso has a very distinct sound that has nothing to do with the Antillean *steel band*, even though that is its origin.
The second place where this highly coveted bean began to be cultivated was Caracas, our capital. Therefore, the second phase involved researching the traditional elements of this city. That is how José reached out to me—while investigating *música cañonera*, which is the quintessential musical expression of the capital.

The brand created by **José Moreno** is **Café Serranía**, and the project encompasses everything from bean selection, planting, and harvesting to roasting, distribution, coffee shops, and a full promotional plan that uses cultural activities as its core tool.

José relies on a multidisciplinary team (to which he is now adding us musicians) that is responsible for developing all the ideas and bringing them to life. Film crews, videographers, and producers are all joining in, treating it more like a "dream" than just a project.

In the pursuit of an exceptional result, José surrounds himself with truly prominent figures. For this reason, one of the fundamental pillars is the cuatrista **Cheo Hurtado**, one of the greatest exponents of this instrument and the creator of the **La Siembra del Cuatro** program, which has become a "factory" of extraordinary musicians.

  • Hive Open Mic Week 300 | Princesa Guitarra (original song)
Although I was one of the first to join **Hive Open Mic**, supporting our friend @cabelindsay, it has been a long time since I last participated. Between one thing and another, the days slip away, and pending tasks get left behind along the way.
When I saw that this occasion marks Week 300, I decided I didn’t want to be left out. So, here I am.
The song I’m bringing today was composed by me back in the 90s for a project of my sister's that, ultimately, never saw the light of day.
"Princesa guitarra" (Princess Guitar) is a song with the atmosphere of a medieval legend, both in its lyrics and its music.
The backing track I’m using is a copy of the arrangement we recorded back then, written by a Mexican friend and music producer who sadly passed away a couple of years after that demo: **Luis Oliver**.
A tribute to a friend and my entry for **Hive Open Mic**, Week 300.
    -----

  • This is the Gaita! || ¡Esta es la gaita!
In recent days, I published a post about one of my favorite rhythms of the Venezuelan Christmas season: the **Parranda**. In that post, I presented a song called [Alúmbrame el Zaguán](https://peakd.com/hive-193816/@ylich/e5b184f3) and mentioned that the musical genre that first introduced me to music in my country was another one also linked to Christmas: the **Gaita**.
The first group I ever directed was **Los Tradicionales**, which was dedicated to this musical style originating from the western part of the country.
Although the *gaita* is associated with Christmas, its lyrics cover all sorts of topics.
In the 1980s, the group **Rincón Morales** had a massive string of hits written by an author who achieved a unique sound by creating romantic *gaitas*: **Lenín Pulgar**. His songs were so successful that he eventually formed his own group, **Amor y Gaita**, to focus specifically on that style of music.
One of those hits—which became one of my all-time favorite *gaitas*—is the one I’m bringing to you today: **"Linda Ilusión."** It was recorded by **Rincón Morales** with lead vocals by **Fernando Rincón**, a singer with a very distinct tone that also contributed to the song's success.
Just as I mentioned with the previous *parranda*, it’s not the same to sing these songs with just a *cuatro*, without the drums, *furrucos*, *charrrascas*, and all the instruments that make up a full *gaita* ensemble.
    I hope you enjoy it!

    I
Con la brisa de una linda noche
A mi mente llego una ilusión
Que te quito la más fina seda
Con la seda más fina de amor
    Esa brisa lleno la existencia
De la mas tierra y dulce esperanza
    Motivando a mis sentimientos
    A saber esperar con confianza
    CORO
    He conocido el amor
Pues la vida me lo ha presentado
    Es la más pura expresión
De todo aquel que está enamorado
    Aunque muy lejos este
    Para mi siempre estas
    a mi lado
    Quiero que sepas
    Mujer que aunque lejos
    Te encuentres
    No te he olvidado
    Y como siempre Estarás
    ocupando en mi alma
    Un lugar sagrado
    II
    De mi alma brotaban impulsos
    Que despierto me hacían soñar
    Recogiendo momentos tan bello
De los que lo quería despertar
    Aunque lejos te encuentres ahora
    Tu presencia es difícil borrar
Están grande el vacio que dejas
Que aun queriendo no puedo llenar
    III
    Convencido de que la ilusión
Todo lo que mi mente veía
    Alejarme de ti no quería
Pues se hacía más fuerte el dolor
Con los ojos nublados en llanto
    Reconozco una gran realidad
Que en amores no importa distancia
Cuando existe un amor de verdad

  • The Parranda has arrived || Llegó la parranda

On more than one occasion, I have written and spoken here about the characteristics of December in Venezuela. Over time, a vast number of traditions have taken root, ensuring that—far beyond the religious aspect—Christmas has become a cultural cornerstone, part of the Venezuelan DNA, encompassing music, celebrations, food, gatherings, and parties.
There are various traditional Venezuelan musical forms directly linked to these festivities, the most important being **aguinaldos**, **parrandas**, and **gaitas**.
Until the early 1960s, the *aguinaldo* was the undisputed king. There were numerous groups dedicated to this genre, and choirs made it a staple of their repertoire, a tradition that continues to this day. During that time, *parrandas* and *gaitas* also began to be heard, though they had a smaller presence.
The significant shift occurred in the late 1970s when the group **Un Solo Pueblo** propelled several *parrandas* to the top of the radio charts. Almost immediately after, in the early 1980s, several *gaita* groups such as **Rincón Morales** and **Cardenales del Éxito** took center stage.
However, another group also emerged that proposed a modernization of the *gaita*, triggering a nationwide expansion of the genre—a true phenomenon. That group is **Guaco**.
Even though I first started "getting serious" about music through the *gaita*, the *parranda* has always been my favorite genre.
    ---

The *parranda* I am bringing you today tells the story of the moment a group of musicians arrives at someone's front door to share their music. This was the custom in the old days, and it is exactly what I did with a family *parranda* group that we kept going for over thirty years.
This piece was written by one of the greatest composers my country has ever produced—the same man who wrote the most widely performed Venezuelan song in the world, **"Moliendo Café."** **Hugo Blanco**, the author of the track, also produced it for the group **Un Solo Pueblo**, and it became an unparalleled hit.
Although it isn't quite the same to sing it accompanied only by a *cuatro*, without the full array of drums and backing vocals, I still truly enjoy performing it every time.
I hope you enjoy it too!

|| HF28 Is my vote worth more or less?
In the post [¿HF28, menos dinero para nosotros?](https://peakd.com/hive-133194/@ylich/xbyqqglj), published about three weeks ago, I was talking about the important changes in Hardfork 28, focusing on the decrease in Hive's inflation, thanks to the exclusion of the DHF from the calculation. At that time, I briefly mentioned that there was also a modification to the voting system, but I didn't elaborate on it, because to tell the truth, I hadn't understood the extent to which it would affect our daily vote.
    ![HF28-2.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/ylich/23wqiRifUMMwRyqWE7eK7HC1rGofWrs85XnyD95LxoT3e5wHi3PaafHncCB3Th7s2mvvH.jpg)
Since then, I have received various inquiries on the subject. And yes, it is a fact that something has changed in how our vote works, its value, and most importantly, the rewards it can generate!
Before, voting with low percentages or voting many times meant receiving a penalty. There was a "convergent curve" that made your vote progressively worth less, especially affecting those with less HP or active curators who voted with low percentages. That is why many of us had the unwritten rule of never dropping below 80% of our mana.
Fortunately, Hardfork 28 brought a fundamental correction. Our vote now operates under a "pure line." In this video, I explain simply what this means, why it compensates for the reduction in the reward pool, and how, from now on, your 10% vote is proportionally worth the same as a 100% vote.
So, hit play on the video and leave me your comments or questions about it!

  • Cuatro Review: The @bertrayo Álvarez Experience [Esp-Eng]
    ![Cuatro-de-Andres-Alvarez.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/ylich/23tvgNKVRsUFo4gbRQTNmKJemaWesgzjC1cKnTW2WSMAasYDsjo6eQJwxBpBoMjq2Y6co.jpg)
It is not every day one gets the chance to review a musical instrument built by a Hiver. So this is a very special opportunity that I celebrate.
Andrés Álvarez, known on Hive as @bertrayo, is a Venezuelan musician and also a luthier dedicated to building cuatros, guitars, and ukuleles (something I forgot to mention in the video, and which is one of his strengths).
My first contact with him was on this platform, and I also got to know him as a musician, as he regularly uploads his performances with the cuatro as a solo instrument.
Andrés lives in Cumaná, the first-born city in the American continent, located in Eastern Venezuela, in Sucre State. There he learned the luthier trade, inheriting the knowledge of the renowned **Figueroa Brothers**, famous musical instrument makers from that city.
I could continue talking about Andrés Álvarez in this written part, but then the video would lose its meaning. The video is in Spanish with English subtitles, so that anyone can learn more about him in this role as an instrument maker.
So I will limit myself to inviting everyone to watch the video and learn in detail about his working methods and my opinion about one of his instruments, cuatro number 19, which he calls "El Gallo de la Medianoche" (The Midnight Rooster).
If you want to know more about his work, you can follow him on his Hive account, @bertrayo, or on his Instagram account, [@luthier_andresalvarez](https://www.instagram.com/luthier_andresalvarez/).

  • ¿HF28, menos dinero para nosotros? || HF28, less money for us?
With the recently completed **HardFork 28**, two main topics have been on the table:
    1. Decrease in the Hive reward pool.
    2. Parity in our votes, regardless of mana. That is, our votes will maintain their efficiency, whether our mana is at 100% or 50%. Previously, voting with low mana or small accounts carried penalties; now every vote counts proportionally the same, making the system fairer for everyone.
But of the two points, the first one seems to have worried some Hivers the most. After all, whenever there is a feeling that we might earn less, alarm bells go off for many people.
So, I decided to address that first point.
It is important to note that beyond what I explain in the video, early analyses have shown an earning level (regarding curation reward APR) higher than the APR before the *HardFork*. This is a good sign. However, as I mention in the video, we will see the true results a bit later. We must give it time.
    # Understanding Hive
The first step in the video is to explain where Hive's money comes from, the source of payments to witnesses, authors, and curation rewards, as well as where the funds allocated to the DHF (our decentralized fund to finance development projects on Hive) come from.
Once that is understood, we can address what some call a "design flaw" in Hive, which is basically the fact that the HBDs from the aforementioned development fund were included in the *Virtual Supply*.
    # Why?
It is important to understand that when our currency drops in price, the HBD in the development fund count as if they were a gigantic mountain of HIVE, artificially inflating inflation when the price dips.
Do you want to know how this was fixed and why it could be positive for your pocket in the long run? I invite you to watch the video!
