We’ll never know what Philando Castile was feeling when the police lights first flashed across his rearview mirror in a suburb city of Minneapolis, Minnesota on a summer evening in 2016. But we can be reasonably certain that he wasn’t feeling surprised. The traffic stop commonly known as a pretextual traffic stop for a broken taillight that precipitated his tragic death, and captured the nation’s attention, was nothing out of the ordinary for Castile. It was in fact the 46th time he had been pulled over. And while this figure may seem shocking to some, there is sadly nothing aberrational about it.

Kids are still an afterthought in reforms championed by lawmakers and pushed by police departments. But in case after case, children as young as 6 have been treated harshly even brutally by police officers. The recent viral video of a 10-year-old being handcuffed for peeing behind his mother’s car by a Mississippi police officer. Has again raised many concerns about why officers are so quick to handcuff black children. The boy’s mother says he remains traumatized by the incident.

Over the past decade, there have been many disturbing encounters between police and the black community. Where officers have used excessive force on unarmed African Americans. The death of Tyre Nichols, a Black man who died three days after being beaten in a traffic stop in early January by five Black Police Officers in Memphis shocked the country.

Now eight months later we are hearing about another outrageous police brutality incident that occurred in the same month in Mississippi before Tyre Nichols's death. The Six white former Rankin law enforcement officers pleaded guilty to hindering prosecution in their torturing of two Black men as part of a “Goon Squad” operation aimed at getting African Americans to “go back” to the predominantly Black city of Jackson.
