You're Ready to Date Again. But Are Your Kids Ready?
Divorce changes a family. But what happens when Mom or Dad is ready to fall in love again—and the kids aren't?
How soon is too soon to start dating? When should you introduce someone new? And do your children get a say in who you choose to love?
In this episode of the You Are Dope Podcast, Sharif and his daughter Taylor have an honest conversation about divorce, dating after marriage, and what happens when a parent's desire to move forward doesn't match their child's readiness.
They explore the emotions that often go unspoken: loyalty to the other parent, fear of being replaced, discomfort with seeing Mom or Dad with someone new, and the sometimes difficult realization that your parents have lives and needs beyond being your parents.
And here's where things get interesting.
Should parents wait until their children are comfortable before dating again? Or is it possible to respect your children's feelings without allowing those feelings to determine your future?
With perspectives from both sides of the parent-child relationship, Sharif and Taylor explore what families can do to communicate, establish boundaries, and make room for new relationships without dismissing the people who were there first.
Because moving on after divorce isn't always just about two adults.
Sometimes the hardest part isn't finding love again.
It's figuring out how to bring the people you already love along with you.
You. Are. Dope.
Does everything need a response?
In this episode of the You Are Dope Podcast, Sharif and Taylor put their communication skills—and their generational differences—to the test.
Through a series of real-life scenarios, they each have to decide: Respond, say more, or leave it alone?
When someone says they need space, do they owe you an explanation? If an argument gets heated, is walking away emotionally intelligent—or disrespectful if you don't say you're coming back? How many times should you explain a boundary before you stop explaining yourself? And when somebody completely misunderstands you, how long should you keep trying to make them understand?
Sharif and Taylor also get into boundaries, overexplaining, protecting your peace, taking time to cool down, generational differences in communication, and the difference between communicating to be understood and communicating because you need the last word.
And we want you playing along.
Before Sharif and Taylor give their answers, decide what you would do:
Respond? Say more? Or leave it alone?
Because good communication isn't always about saying more. Sometimes one sentence could prevent a whole lot of unnecessary tension.
And sometimes?
You've already said enough.
You. Are. Dope.
What happens when your parents start needing you in ways they never did before?
In this episode of the You Are Dope Podcast, Sharif Colbert and his daughter and co-host, Taylor Colbert, sit down with Sharif’s oldest sister, Latissue “Sissy” Colbert, for an honest conversation about aging parents, caregiving, independence, family responsibility, and the conversations families often wait too long to have.
After losing their father in January, Sharif and Sissy found themselves looking back at his final years from two very different perspectives. Sissy was in Alaska and became their dad’s primary caregiver as he became less mobile and needed more help. Sharif was thousands of miles away in Atlanta, trying to remain involved while decisions about their father’s care were happening from a distance.
They talk openly about the questions that come with that transition: When do you step in? How do you respect an aging parent’s independence when you’re concerned about their safety? How much say should siblings have when one person is carrying most of the day-to-day responsibility? And how do you remain someone’s son or daughter when so much of the relationship has become about caregiving?
Sharif also shares lessons from friends who have cared for aging parents themselves—including what they wish they had known about medical care, insurance, finances, asking for help, loneliness, planning ahead, and the reality that sometimes you simply don’t know what you don’t know until you’re living it.
But this conversation isn’t only about preparing for decline.
It’s also about remembering that underneath the medications, appointments, paperwork, insurance, and difficult decisions…
That’s still Mom. That’s still Dad.
And sometimes the most important advice is also the simplest:
Make the memories.
If your parents are still healthy and independent, this episode may give you a few conversations worth having before your family is forced to have them.
You. Are. Dope.
At just 20 years old, author and youth empowerment speaker Lawrence Harris has already turned some of his hardest experiences into a mission to help other young people recognize their worth.
Sharif and Kennedy sit down with Lawrence for an honest conversation about bullying, mental health, childhood challenges, therapy, self-worth, and what it takes to find your voice when the world has given you plenty of reasons to question it.
Lawrence also shares how his definition of success has changed—from wanting recognition to wanting impact—and why he believes we should spend less time asking young people “What do you want to do?” and more time asking “Who do you want to be?”
This is a conversation about resilience, purpose, and learning that knowing who you are can take some of the power away from what other people say about you.
Because sometimes finding your voice starts with believing you matter.
You. Are. Dope.
Police called.
Parents knocking on doors.
Sisters calling worried.
Half the family trying to figure out what was going on.
All because a 25-year-old woman sent three words:
“Check my location.”
And did I mention this was only her SECOND WEEK back home?
Welcome home, Taylor. 😂
Yeah… it escalated quickly.
But underneath all the chaos was a real conversation:
When your children become adults, where does parental concern end and overstepping begin?
And what responsibility do adult children have when it comes to communicating with the people who love them?
Taylor and I tell the story from both sides and trust me, we both had some things to own.

Who Are You When the Chapter Ends?
Many of us define ourselves by the roles we’ve held for years—teacher, parent, caregiver, student, spouse, leader, or professional.
But what happens when that chapter closes?
Who are you when the role that helped define you is no longer part of your everyday life?
In this episode of You Are Dope!, Taylor steps out of her usual co-host role and into the guest seat after recently earning her Master’s in Social Work. After spending more than 20 years in school, she opens up about the excitement, uncertainty, and fears that come with figuring out what life looks like next.
Sharif and Taylor explore identity, the comfort of what’s familiar, and how we begin discovering who we are when an important chapter comes to an end.
Because eventually, all of us will face a moment when life asks:
Who are you now?
🎙️ You Are Dope! with Sharif Colbert
Guest: Taylor Colbert
Co-host: Kennedy Colbert
This week on the You Are Dope Podcast, Kennedy shares her deeply personal journey of knowing something wasn't right with her health and the frustration of repeatedly being told that nothing was wrong.
What followed was years of unanswered questions, self-doubt, and the challenge of advocating for herself when the people she trusted weren't listening.
Joining the conversation is Dr. Brandi Sinkfield, a board-certified anesthesiologist, healthcare leader, and founder of Women's Digital Health. She is passionate about helping patients navigate the healthcare system, advocate for themselves, and improve communication with their medical providers—especially when concerns are dismissed or overlooked. Her work focuses on women's health, patient advocacy, and creating better healthcare experiences for all.
Together, we discuss:
This is a conversation about courage, persistence, and the power of trusting your own voice.
Because sometimes advocating for yourself isn't optional—it's necessary.

This week, Kennedy and I sit down with Charm, the mother of Dallas the Stylest, to talk about parenting, identity, love, fear, growth, and acceptance.
After our previous conversation with Dallas about shame and growing up feeling different, we wanted to hear another important perspective:
A mother’s.
Charm opens up about what it was like navigating emotions, expectations, confusion, and ultimately learning through love and understanding as a parent.
This conversation is honest, compassionate, and real.
We discuss:
This episode is for parents, children, families, and anyone who has ever struggled with feeling fully accepted.

Recently, a post from Dallas the Stylist stopped me in my tracks.
It was raw. Honest. And for a lot of us… familiar.
In this episode of the You Are Dope Podcast, Dallas opens up about growing up with shame, feeling like something was wrong with him, and trying to earn acceptance through perfection. What started as survival eventually turned into a deeper journey of healing and learning to love himself.
We’re also joined by Josh Noblitt—an ordained minister, licensed marriage and family therapist, and certified sex therapist—who helps unpack how shame begins in childhood, how it shows up in adulthood, and what it actually takes to heal from it.
This isn’t just Dallas’s story.
It’s a conversation about the many ways people grow up feeling “not enough”… and what it looks like to finally break that pattern.
We talk about:
If you’ve ever felt like you had to perform to be loved… this one is for you.

If you died tomorrow, would your children be grieving you… or cleaning up chaos?
It’s a hard question—but an important one.
In this episode of the You Are Dope Podcast, we talk about the conversations many families avoid until it’s too late. From wills and life insurance to passwords, debt, funeral wishes, and unresolved family tension, too many children are left to sort through confusion while trying to mourn.
We break down the key questions kids should ask their parents now—and the things parents should handle now so their children don’t have to carry unnecessary stress later.
This episode is about love, responsibility, preparation, and leaving peace instead of problems.
