Identify where your business depends on you and start mapping what needs to change in the You Are Not the System workshop: https://youarenotthesystem.com/workshop
When your business keeps bringing every decision back to you, there is work to do in its design. There may also be something harder to see: beliefs about who you are, what you have to prove and what you cannot let go of, which become embedded in how the business operates.
In this episode, I’m joined by leadership developer and Genomic Health co-founder Gene Early to explore the relationship between Founder Dependency, identity and the capacity to lead. Gene shares how losing his father at twelve shaped a thirty-five-year journey that he describes as remedial, before his life became generative and eventually exponential.
We explore his distinction between core and counterfeit identities, why acknowledging a strength is different from owning it, and how the need to prove ourselves can continue driving a business long after we have achieved outward success. I bring my Business Architecture perspective to the conversation, because when we build systems without examining the beliefs behind them, we can end up systematizing our dysfunction.
Gene also shares how Genomic Health’s founding team reconsidered its plan to go directly to consumers and chose to work through physicians instead. His account shows what becomes possible when a founder creates enough safety for disagreement and allows the team’s Accumulated Intelligence to shape the direction.
Throughout the conversation, we connect the human work with the business work: extracting Founder Intelligence so the business can carry more, while helping the founder move beyond the internal patterns that keep them carrying everything.

Leda told me her biggest struggle was saying what she does in one or two sentences. I asked her why she believed it had to be.
What came out of that question is the thing most expertise-led founders get wrong about their own marketing.
Leda is a registered dietitian who spent more than ten years employed before going out on her own in April 2024, and she now helps women end the war with food and themselves. We talk about the cycles that get systematized into a business without anyone noticing, why she moved from one to one work into the Nourish Flourish Energy Collective, and the moment she diagnosed her own gap out loud: she was talking about the solution while the people she wanted to serve were still trying to understand the problem, and the journey between those two places had never been designed.
Then we map what a 15 second clip is actually responsible for, where a buying decision really happens, and how to give every asset in your business a job.

Fred Joyal answered thousands of calls from people looking for a dentist and heard something nobody had planned for: they were as afraid of choosing a dentist as they were of sitting in the chair.
That one discovery became the scripting, the hiring criteria and the advertising for a company that reached close to $50 million a year.
Fred co-founded 1-800-DENTIST without being a dentist, built it to a 100 seat call center, and retired from a business where three employees hit 25 years in the same month. We talked about the two day offsite where his team wrote the core values the employees then defended on their own, why money stayed third on the priority list behind a great place to work and everybody wins, and the moment I pushed back on his advice to throw your brains at the problem, because doing that over and over for the same problem is exactly what founder dependency looks like.

You left the job with the golden handcuffs, and then you built a new pair out of your own knowledge, decisions and client relationships.
Virginia Shower runs a membership, a software platform and a studio, and in this conversation she admits she has done exactly that inside her own company.
Virginia is the founder of the Soulpreneurs Association, SoulSoftware and SoulCast Studios, and she is also my strategic partner. We talk about the hospital stay that ended her push harder era, why she rebuilt the user experience of her software to calm a nervous system instead of overstimulate it, how she taught herself AWS Lambda and React to build a studio nobody else could build for her, and what it takes to use AI without handing over the part of your business that is actually human.
Midway through she turned the question back on me and asked how a founder stays connected to their own business while automating it, which is where I shared the carrier method and why my AI chief of staff is named Lena and always says she is AI.

For fifteen years, Cintia Arnhoffer thought she was too slow. The real cause was 2,085 developers publishing availability in Excel grids, PDFs and 55 WhatsApp chats.
Cintia stopped blaming herself, found the root cause, and her company's gross income went up five times in four weeks.
Cintia runs company formation, visas, bank accounts and real estate in Dubai, where 300,000 projects are under construction and units can sell out in four to six hours. In this conversation, we walk through how her IT co-founder asked her to list every single place she was losing a client, how that list became an AI search engine and a qualification chat that answers the 11 p.m. inquiry she used to miss, and what happened to her life once the manual work stopped being hers to carry.
We also talk about the guilt of working less, paying for results instead of hours, and why asking for an outside viewpoint is not weakness.

She carried the idea for six years. She is not a developer. She built the first working version in three days.
Jimena Serfaty's app went live on the Google Play Store the day we recorded this conversation.
Jimena is an Argentinian-born, London-based operations and systems specialist who wanted a private, personal way to send postcards to her niece and nephew while she travels. When nothing existed that did what she wanted, she used Claude, ChatGPT and Lovable to build a prototype, then taught herself privacy, security, migration and app store testing along the way.
We talk about founder intelligence, why a career that looks disjointed is actually a wheel with spokes, why common sense is not that common, and what it takes to get an idea out of your head and into something the business can own.

Cynthia Arnhofer's business 5x'd its gross income in four weeks, and she did not do it by adding hours.
If you are the person every decision comes back to, this conversation is about what changes when the business stops needing you to personally hold it together.
I recorded this before I rebranded the show, so you will hear us call it The Finally Feeling. I am leaving it in, because while I was writing You Are Not the System I realised the book had become an ecosystem, and I stopped building the podcast until I understood where it belonged. Cynthia's story already belonged inside that body of work.
We talk about recurring problems becoming data, bringing in expertise you do not personally have, and applying technology to the right problem instead of adding technology for technology's sake.

From foster care and narcissistic abuse to stage-four cancer survivor and trauma-informed life coach, Trish Osborne shows how unlearning perfectionism and people-pleasing becomes real healing.
What if the "good girl" rules are making you sick and small. In this raw, compassionate conversation, Trish Osborne shares her path through foster care, sexual abuse, two narcissistic marriages, and stage-four ovarian cancer, and how she rebuilt self-trust, boundaries, and a life of purpose. We talk nervous system healing, spiritual support, and the truth about generational patterns so you can stop carrying what is not yours.
Key Takeaways
Perfectionism is a survival strategy, not a personality trait, and it is teachable to release.
People-pleasing is boundary failure. Your body will keep the score until you change the pattern.
Healing is daily. Treat it as a gift. Choose one doable practice and repeat.
Jealousy signals unmet needs. Address the need and the charge dissolves.
Spiritual support can coexist with grief. You can honor the past and choose a new future.
Stopping generational trauma begins with honest repair and clear boundaries.
Memorable Quotes

"I was taught to keep everyone else comfortable and it nearly cost me my life." — Kathy
"Perfection kept me safe as a child. It kept me stuck as an adult." — Trish
"At any point you can declare your sovereignty and live your own life." — Kathy
"My people will find me because I am willing to be authentic." — Trish

What actually changes results—strategy or self-belief? In this soul-level, practical episode, Kathy Baldwin and Patricia Stepler dismantle the myth that success starts outside of you. We dive into the Law of Polarity, Law of Relativity, and Law of Gestation—and why the Law of Attraction is an effect, not the cause. You'll hear how Patricia stopped outsourcing her future to systems and "shoulds," and how a powerful identity shift helped her family defy the odds. If you've read every mindset book yet your outcomes still look the same, this one's for you.

🎙️ Key Highlights
Guest's "Crap to Unlearn": Stop outsourcing your future to employers, systems, and "shoulds." Your outside results won't change until your inner beliefs do.
Kathy's tie-in: We talk about how beliefs drive hormones, stress, and the nervous system—and how that biochemistry writes your outer reality.
Notable context: Patricia's pivot began when her son (a type 1 diabetic) earned a full athletic scholarship—proof that belief + aligned action can beat the odds.
Relatable signs: Stuck on a pay scale, waiting for permission, feeling like "I've done self-help for years but my results haven't changed."
Myths challenged: "Law of Attraction is the cause." (Patricia reframes it as an effect.) "Timing is in my control." (Law of Gestation says otherwise.) "My way is the only way." (Law of Relativity shifts perspective.)
Action step: Audit three areas where you've been obeying "shoulds." Apply: Polarity (find the opposite), Relativity (choose an empowering lens), Gestation (release the timeline).

💡 Memorable Quotes
Patricia: "Results change when beliefs change—never the other way around."
Patricia: "Law of Attraction is an effect. The cause is what you believe and embody daily."
Patricia: "Get rid of the 'shoulds.' The Law of Gestation says timing isn't your business."
Kathy: "Your biochemistry is writing your outer reality—beliefs show up as hormones, stress, and decisions."
Kathy: "Perspective is power. Change the lens; change your life."
After literally falling through a trapdoor and breaking her back, Dr. Melissa Swonger had a choice: collapse into the dark or finally listen to her soul. In less than five months, she wrote her book, launched a nonprofit, and sparked a movement around radical kindness.
Not long ago, Dr. Melissa Swonger took a single step onto what she thought was solid ground…and fell through a trapdoor.
The storm-shelter door opened beneath her, shattering her back and pelvis and forcing her into a season of stillness she never asked for. Lying flat on her back, Melissa finally did the one thing she'd resisted for sixteen years: she wrote her story.
In this episode of Unlearn the Crap & Level Up, host Kathy Baldwin sits down with Melissa to explore how that one decision ignited a wave of radical change.
Together they unpack:
Growing up with CPTSD and a "world is unsafe" brain
What happens when trauma trains you for protection instead of connection
Why forgiveness of an unrepentant parent became the turning point in Melissa's legacy
Awareness → Connection → Movement as a practical framework for transformation
The trapdoor accident on May 20, 2025—and the decision to finally write Whom He Raised
How radical kindness "walks in when everyone else walks out"
What it means to become an agent of change in your family, your work, and your community
Melissa also shares how The Sage Hill Project is mobilizing radical kindness as a movement, not a moment.
If you've ever felt like you're lying in your own trapdoor moment, wondering how to keep going, this conversation is your reminder that one step—just one—can change everything.
