Intro 
A. THE WORLD IS DARKNESS.
  1. The symbolism of darkness.  
  2. The world of darkness needs light.   
    3.  
    B. CHRIST IS THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD.
    1. The role of Israel.    Isa. 60:1-3.  
    2. The Messiah was prophesied to be “a light to the nations.” Isa. 42:6; 49:6; Matthew 4:16.
    3. Light symbolizes primarily salvation and life.  Isa. 49:6; Jn. 1:4; 8:12.   
      4. C. YOU ARE THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD (Matthew 5:14-16).
      1. The disciples of Jesus are the light of the world (Matthew 5:14).    
      2. The light comes from God.    Jn. 3:19-20; 2 Cor. 4:6; Col. 1:13
      3. The light must shine and not be hidden (Matthew 5:14b-15).
        4. a. The light exposes what’s in the dark.   
        b. A city on a hill cannot be hidden (Matthew 5:14b).   
        c. A lamp is not lit and put under a basket (Matthew 5:15).   
        1. The nature of our shining (Matthew 5:16).   
          2. a. good words.
           
          b. good works.    
           
          1. The purpose of our shining: the glory of the Father (Matthew 5:16).
