  • 70 People and Still the Bottleneck - Llewellyn Watson, StructureIt

Llewellyn Watson built StructureIt to 70 people across South Africa, the UK, Mauritius and New Zealand – and was still the engine. Nervous tics. Eczema. Ten years without a genuine break. When his coach suggested he write a spec for a demo environment and he said he didn’t have time, the reply was: “Are you listening to yourself?”

This is the full arc of how he got out. The strategy work he’d never done (he admits he had to look up what the word meant), the hires that created capacity before he had capacity, the emotionally draining conversations about roles with people he’d worked alongside for a decade, and the org design built for where the business was going rather than who was already in it.

It isn’t a clean story. The first CEO he appointed to run StructureIt wasn’t the right fit and Llewellyn had to step back in – a year he openly says he didn’t enjoy. What followed was a bike ride, a walk up Table Mountain, a second attempt at succession that worked, and an unsolicited LinkedIn message from Morningstar that arrived at exactly the moment he was finally ready to answer it.

StructureIt now runs under a CEO who is better at it than he was. DealX sold to Morningstar in March 2025. Llewellyn is building Zell Analytics.

If you’re the bottleneck in your own business, this is what the way out actually looks like, including the parts that don’t go to plan.
