A long listen

There are some books that one listens to or reads and hates when they come to an end. But this is one that I turned off after 3 hours of trying hard to get involved with the characters. Up to that 3 hour line I hadn't discovered a story line or even an interesting narrative, just a long, long whine going nowhere much. It may of course suddenly taken off after 3 hours and just 5 minutes more, so apologies to the author if it did. I have to say its a disappointment as my two books per month are never quite enough for the whole month so I really regret wasting 50% of that allowance.

A difficult read that stays with you

I almost didn't make it through the first third of the book. The protagonist is so ill at ease in the world, I felt his agony was becoming contagious. The writing was effective, but it was almost too hard to be with this character.

As the book shifts in its focus, the power of the character is magnified further and the story becomes impossible to put down. Avoiding plot spoilers here, suffice it to say that the character's experience is fascinating, hard-breaking and, ultimately hopeful. A terrific book and well worth the read.

Surprised by a Great Read

I agree with the other commenters. This book took me by surprise. I read the entire thing over the weekend, finding it hard to put it down. The compact style keep the movement of thought and deed moving at an engaging speed. After finishing the book, I immediately looked for more books from this author. Without reservation, I recommend this book.

Dismal tale of a doomed life

Having enjoyedHow the Light Gets Inby the same author, I decided to give this book a chance, despite misgivings from reading the blurbs. I can respect the author and her empathy for the lost souls of the world, but I can't say that I enjoyed reading This Is How.

Our "hero", Patrick, is the epitome of the lost soul. He lacks self-awareness, and his unrealistic expectations constantly set him up for disappointment. He experiences social interactions with hallucinatory vividness; so much hangs on each exchange. Hyland so skillfully portrays the week before his crime that I wanted to shake Patrick through the pages of the book. It seems odd, however, that Patrick knows with confidence that he is a good auto mechanic and a good pool player. These gifts, naturally, do not translate into any sort of well-being or patience with the world. They seem instead to hasten his demise.

It is to be expected that most of the characters in the novel are male and unlikeable. This makes it hard to recommend the book to anyone except perhaps women (like the author) who are intrigued by male pathology. The few female characters are a welcome break from the overall gloom that pervades.

The ending is a bit unsatisfying. It feels like a desperate reach for some kind of insight, some kind of hope that Patrick will become more whole in the future, despite facing the horrors of life imprisonment. Good luck with that!

Glaister Is Losing It

I absolutely loved Glaister's horrifying and beautifully writtenHonour Thy Fatherso I decided to pick up LOSING IT in the hopes of finding a book that would be as good. Unfortunately, I was completely disappointed. Mind you, this novel isn't bad. It's too trivial and boring even to be bad. It reads more like a very rough first draft for a novel than an actual novel. The characters are very unconvincing. Their motivations remain completely unclear. At the end of the novel, the author just cuts the narrative short without explaining why these people acted the way it did. I still have no idea why any of these events happened.

The saddest thing is that there is definitely a germ of a good novel in there somewhere if only Glaister had taken the trouble of transforming this rough draft into a full-fledged work of fiction and offering some answers to the questions she raises in the novel.

Another great story from Jessica Duchen

Songs of Triumphant Love is as good if not better than Jessica Duchen's previous books. I loved it.The characters are wonderfully real and it's full of musical content as well as the problems and indecisions of normal life. The ending was never a foregone conclusion, it could have gone several ways.

A really, really good, entertaining, and well written book and the narrator does a great job with Terry's Glaswegian accent.

Perfect title for a great novel

Would you listen to Fieldwork again? Why?

There is a lot to love about Fieldwork. I would certainly listen again to pick up on the many intriguing details I undoubtedly missed during my first listen. It's a book that is not merely interesting; it has a tale to tell about what it means to be human and how humans in different worlds all manage to live in an often unpredictable and sometimes hostile world; and how we all misunderstand each other. And it was funny, too.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Fieldwork?

The revelation at the end was well worth the wait. It wasn't a revelation in the traditional sense; hearing what Martiya finally learnt about the Diyalo and how she coped with that knowledge made her character, and her circumstances, much clearer. All peoples, and some people, do very peculiar things in the name of spirituality and culture. It is our way.

Any additional comments?

I read this book because I recalled a review by Stephen King. He said it was good book with an ill conceived title and a bad cover. Pfffft! to that! (She said in her usual articulate manner). The title was a perfect match for the narrative; and having been to northern Thailand many times, the original cover was also perfect.

Worst Book Yet on Audible

Got to say this was the worst book I have listened to if it was not for the fact I had no other book with me on a very long journey I would not have finished this. A tale of two men called Don one a Buddhist priest and one a hard drinking womaniser, whom obviously are going to collide now they both have cancer. It says something that I found the Buddhist the more interesting character. No dimension from either character and nothing of any interest happens that you probably haven?t already guessed.

funny and profound

The characters in this book leap out from the page and in particular the crude, intense American Businessman repulses the reader but his story draws you in to the tragic yet tender conclusion.

Blood brothers by Josephine Cox

Josephine Cox never let's her readers down when writing books. This story has her usual characters in that they have situations in their lives that make them what they are now. This story has the can't put it Down syndrome till it's finished which I like from Josephine and as long as she writes the way she does I will keep buying her books.
