Gave up...

Oh how I wish I had read the reviews on Amazon first. I had loved other Jane Smiley books but this one was just so boring. I couldn't get past the interminable and endless pointless conversations. If you find out (too late in my case!) that you prefer books with action rather than words then this book isn't for you.

Sadly enough, I could not finish this audio book.

The subject matter was, of course, an immigrant family and their trials.

I just could not gain any interest in what was happening, or find a reason why I should care.

It was an audiobook, and I was driving at the time, so I could not risk falling asleep.

I apologize to Ms. Ali; and I will certainly try another of her works, if she can switch up on her style and get some real plot movement.

Love John Mortimer

I'm a fan.

Quite honestly the last -but not the best

Over the years a collector of Rumpole and his other works I have thoroughly enjoyed his writing, some to a greater extent than others.This, his last work ,I believe, is not memorable as it should have been.It appears to be aimed at a teen feminine market as many of the latest movies appear to be.This ,obviously is my own opinion but leaves me wishing for the wit and characters to be found in so many of his other works.The angst between the two main characters has its witty moments but on the whole fail,in my opinion, to achieve any high points.

John Mortimer's "Quite Honestly"

I've Been reading John Mortimer's books for some time. If you appreciate British dry humor, you'll like this book, and others of his as well. He's witty, funny and has a rather jaundiced view of humanity.

Charming Dry Wit and Deft Humor

Young Lucinda Purefoy wants to do good. To that end she gets involved with an organization that helps convicts when they get out of prison. What happens when Lucinda is assigned her ex-con leads to a bunch of adventures that turns do-gooderism on its head. Mortimer is at his best in this wryly witty look at liberalism at work. What's funniest is that Mortimer is poking fun at his own kind. A delightful read in every way.

I'm afraid I found this book extremely tedious and irritating. there were several strands to the plot which were never brought together and a host of minor characters who seemed to add nothing to the story. I kept thinking that all will be revealed at the end but I was just left with a lot of unanswered questions. Maybe I missed the point. I also think the narration didn't help as I found it very flat and monotone.

A "MUST READ" (or re-read)

This beautifully told story belongs in every library, and then....lend it out as often as possible! It's a "classic" of the "Holden Caulfield genre, and although I don't know, I'd imagine it's now, or has been, studied in High School English/writing programs.

Somewhat worn but cheap enough.

Humorous and Heartwarming

Where has this book been all my life? Richard Bardford's novel is a beautiful coming-of-age story with lovable characters, laugh-out-loud scenes, and wonderful dialog. Though humorous, Bardford's tale addresses the serious issues of class and race, making the book both timely and timeless.

I would tell people that you should step outside your comfort zone with books because it is good to add more authors and genres to your reading portfolio. Even if you do not read books like this.

I normally read books of this genre but l also stepped outside my comfort zone with authors and genres l am so glad l did because l have read so many great books and come across some great authors.

Beyond Wonderful!!

This is an amazing collection of very short stories. They will make you smile, shed a tear, and shake your head at how little mankind changes over the years. Most of them have a very gentle moral to be learned. I bought the kindle version and am now going to find print copies for myself and a few friends.

If you read nothing else in this collection, please read 'A Four-Footed Faith and a Two.' This story about a dog named Stubs will stay with you long after you have finished the last paragraph. I guarantee it.

fun and enlightening

This is a delightful collection of short stories presenting people with varied characters engaged in everyday foibles and mishaps and schemes and pleasantries. Well written and finely crafted.

Sweet and clean, and not just for children.

Eleanor H. Porter is a favorite author. I have all her books. If you loved Pollyanna, don't miss some of the other books by the same author. She didn't write just for children.

good place to rest your brain

More fun at the vet clinic!

I love these books! This is the 5th in the series of the Barleybridge Veterinary Hospital, and it does not disappoint in my opinion. I love the stories of the village and the animal owners - both large and small animals. I laughed and cried.

Blah

This is the fifth novel in a series about a veterinary practice in Barleybridge, England, that started off strong. However this edition has continued the general downward turn in the books about life and work in the village. In this volume, Kate, the veterinary student who started with the practice as a receptionist but has since gone back to school, returns to the practice to get some experience. In so doing she must interact with her old flame, Scott, once more. The spark between Scott and Kate is what made the first book in this series so engaging, but since then Scott has had a child and gotten married, although this relationship is strained even before Kate comes back onto the scene. On a side note a new vet, Virginia, is universally unpopular and making difficulties at the practice.

This whole book seems to be built on a foundation of straw - a good portion of the book just before this in the series is devoted to how the practice cannot afford to keep their current staff and add Scott full time, then this volume has Scott working full time, plus adding perhaps the least likable character ever in the vet Virginia. And not in a love-to-hate her way, just a blah way. Additionally, the love triangle between Kate, Scott, and his wife just give you no one whatsoever to root for.
