This episode was recorded in August 2020 right in the thick of the beginning months of the pandemic. It resonates still--even as we still are navigating how the world has changed since it began. Learning how to accept the rather nebulous nature of grief is challenging. What matters is being able to name and feel our emotions in the safe witness of another human being who is comfortable enough to be with us in our grief. What may be helpful is understanding:
1. Humans are hardwired to connect; when experiencing disconnection (for any reason--death, divorce, moving away, leaving a job, etc) from situations, environments, or people, we feel emotional pain. This emotional pain may be described in different ways.
2. Grief is not just regarding the death of someone we love. We can grieve the loss of a friendship or the end of a dream career. There are complex layers to grieving.
3. Loss is loss. It doesn't matter the intensity or how traumatic it was. If you feel it, it is valid.
4. Grief may present in a variety of different ways--anger, irritation, lack of energy, or anxiety. There is no "right way" to grieving. It is as unique as each of our fingerprints.
5. In this podcast, I mention David Kessler, a long-time colleague and co-author with Elisabeth Kubler-Ross of the book On Grief and Grieving about the five stages of grief. Mr. Kessler has written a new book on grief, adding a new stage--finding meaning--to the classic five stages of grief, Finding Meaning: The Sixth Stage of Grief.
6. Here's the podcast with Brene Brown talking with David Kessler. In addition, David has a brand new podcast, Finding Healing, that is packed with FANTASTIC information.
7. Here's all a link to a Feeling Wheel (I call it an "emotional wheel" in the podcast). Great tool to help "name" our emotions.
