Humans relate to each other primarily through the sharing of stories. And since that’s true, it means that anybody can write a book. After all, a book is just sharing a collection of thoughts through the story-telling process. While anybody can write a book, however, the publication process can be daunting and confusing. So much goes into publishing a book, whether it’s type-setting, editing, cover design, or marketing, that it can be overwhelming to the author who wants to publish their book. This week, Nick Poe from Tall Pines Publishing, an independent publishing house, joins John on the podcast to talk through everything publishing related. Tune in to also hear them discuss the writing process and how to get started writing your book.

Conversations are a crucial life skill. They are literally the way in which we communicate with one another, relate to each other, and feel seen, valued, and heard. It’s something we start practicing as soon as we begin to talk. Even so, we struggle to be able to have deep, meaningful conversations with others; especially with strangers. But what could happen if we were able to change that? What could we learn from each other if we were able to learn to listen well and communicate well with people? As it turns out, Dr. Heather Holleman has discovered that there are six primary topics that we, as humans, prefer to converse about. This week, she joins John to discuss her new book The Six Conversations: Pathways to Connecting in an Age of Isolation and Incivility. Today they talk through the four mindsets, the three fresh goals, and the six types of conversations that you can use to build deep, warm relationships both with your mentees and with any other person you encounter.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control; against such things there is no law.” - Galatians 5:22-23
When we walk in the Spirit, we can’t help but model the affect the Holy Spirit has on our lives. The Spirit fills us up and guides us. He counsels us and convicts us of the things that are not of God. It’s literally impossible to not model the fruit of the Spirit when we’re walking inline with God’s will for our lives. But while we know what the fruit of the Spirit IS, do we really know what these words mean? After all, the joy of the Lord goes much deeper than “the emotion of great delight or happiness” that the dictionary defines it as. The same it is with peace. The peace that passes all human understanding goes so much deeper than “an absence of fear, anxiety, war, etc”. This week, John and Zach are (finally) back on the podcast to talk through what peace is in terms of a fruit of the Spirit, how it works itself in our lives, and how we can lead our mentees in enjoying a life of peace.

At Forerunner Mentoring, they help boys meet their potential and become Men of God through implementing after school mentoring programs in the local public schools and matching students who don’t have father figures with a one-on-one mentor. To facilitate those programs, they employ “coaches” in their after school programs. The job of these coaches is to mentor the students in group settings, each working with a specific grade or group of kids. As is the case with working with any group of kids, discipline is a constant element of these programs, and each coach handles that discipline in a slightly different way within the guidelines at Forerunner. In our most recent series, Josh took over the podcast to talk with each of the coaches about the why behind their mentoring activities. For the season finale of You Can Mentor, Josh brings all of them back for one massive roundtable where they talk about anything and everything mentoring. Listen in this week to hear Josh, Joel, Ryan, Jamari, and Holden talk about some crazy topics including the strengths and weaknesses of each coach, their experiences in program, integrity within mentoring, and how mentors who aren’t involved in mentoring alongside each other can gain and benefit from the same type of community that we coaches do.
