You Don’t Have to React (Even If You Think You Do)

Why We React When We’re Overwhelmed

All day long, life is broken into a series of choices.

When you’re calm, cool, and collected, those choices feel clear.You understand how you’re moving through the world and you feel confident in your steps forward.

But when you’re exhausted…When your brain has been swimming in sensory overload all day…

Sometimes those choices leave you looking back at your day thinking:

“What the f* did I just do?”**

I can’t be the only one who has snapped at my husband after a long day and immediately thought:

“This is NOT how I wanted my night to go.”

Or even straight up embarrassed by my response.

That moment right there?

That’s the difference between a reaction and a response.

What Is a Nervous System Reaction?

Let’s be real… It’s the same thing as any reaction but specifically when your brain moves into survival mode.

The amygdala, the part of the brain responsible for threat detection and fight-or-flight responses, takes OVER.

When this happens:

* Logic takes a backseat

* Survival instincts move to the front

* Your brain prioritizes safety over rational thought

Your brain doesn’t care if you are happy.

It cares if you are alive.

For hundreds of thousands of years, that system protected humans from threats like:

* wild animals

* hostile tribes

* starvation

* environmental danger

And it worked beautifully.

The problem?

Your brain hasn’t evolved as quickly as your environment.

Why Modern Stress Confuses the Brain

Today, most people aren’t fighting lions.

But your brain doesn’t know the difference between:

* a predator in the wild

* or walking into the kitchen after a 12-hour day and seeing a bigger mess than when you left

Maybe your partner promised they would clean it.

Maybe you were already at your emotional limit.

Your brain registers a broken expectation + exhaustion as a threat.

And suddenly…

Kaboom. Reaction time.

Research shows that the brain processes emotional threats up to five times faster than logical reasoning, according to research cited by the American Psychological Association.

Which means your reaction often happens before your rational brain catches up.

Why This Matters

Because I don’t know about you…

But I don’t want to fight people all the time.

I don’t want my days spent putting out little emotional fires that turn into full-blown infernos.

I want to enjoy the one life I’ve been given.

And that requires learning how to interrupt the reaction loop.

How Do We Interrupt the Reaction Cycle?

1. Remove the Emotion for a Moment

I’m sorry.

I really am for saying this.

Because I used to get SO mad when people told me to “take the emotion out of it.”

But once you understand the neurons firing in your brain, you can return to the root cause of your reaction.

Ask yourself:

* Am I actually mad about this situation?

* Or was it a series of events, and this is simply the catalyst?

2. Ask One Simple Question

Is this life-threatening?

If the answer is no, you likely don’t need a survival reaction.

It might sound dramatic, but remember:

Your brain doesn’t always know the difference.

3. Take Three Cleansing Breaths

Try it right now.

Inhale through your nose.

Then exhale forcefully through your mouth.

Do that three times.

This breathing pattern activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which tells your body it is safe to relax.

In other words:

You give your brain time to catch up with reality.

4. Choose the Second Thought

This one changed everything for me.

Usually the first thing that pops into your mind is the reaction.

But after you pause…

A second thought shows up.

That second thought is almost always more thoughtful, more grounded, and far less destructive.

So when in doubt?

Choose the second thought.

From one sassy human to the next.

Lots of love,

Tia
