Who Do You Think You Are?

You don’t know you’re like most people

Listen Later

“If you are like most people, then like most people, you don’t know you’re like most people.”
In some ways we realize we’re all very much alike. That’s why we can get behind big, bold statements like: “All men are created equal.” But research shows that regardless of IQ or education level, we are all susceptible to similar errors in our reasoning. As a result, most people believe they are the exceptions to the rule. Most overestimate their abilities and underestimate their weaknesses. Some researchers call this “illusory bias.” It reminds me of William Saroyan’s statement: “Everyone has got to die, but I always thought an exception would be made in my case.”
This podcast is intended -- with a focus on self-exploration and personal identity -- to help you construct who you are, and how you want to feel, think, believe, and behave for yourself. The book Who Do You Think You Are is also available at all major e-retailers, and you can find it at bigselfschool.com/store.
