  • The Farewell (2019) with Pete Byrnes

2019 was a busy year for excellent movies - what with your Parasites, Portrait of a Lady on Fires, Jojo Rabbits - but do not let that excuse Cozi or YOU from seeing Lulu Wang’s masterful sad-com The Farewell! Equal parts familiar returning-to-your-hometown story and a one-of-a-kind glimpse into traditional Chinese family dynamics, this film will make you laugh, then cry, and before you know it, you'll be calling your congressional representative demanding “Justice for Awkwafina and Zhao Shuzhen!!” when you discover neither were nominated for an Oscar. Tune in, won't you, stupid child?

Also discussed in this episode: Rush Hour, Jason Segel, and The Before Trilogy.

Cozi watched Call Me By Your Name after being convinced by Lucé and Pete on our April 6th episode.

  • Home Fries (1998)

This week Lucé is demanding justice for the completely forgotten dark comedy, Home Fries. Marketed all wrong as a daffy romcom in 1998, the film found a small audience on home video, but this chaotic murder-riddled romp is rarely acknowledged as the triumph that it is. If Schitt’s Creek turned you into a Catherine O’Hara fan, you’ll love her as a deranged Texas widow hellbent on revenge.  Can Cozi get down with a twisted fast-food comedy from the vicious mind of Vince Gilligan (pre-Breaking Bad)? Can you?

Also! Cozi finally watched Another Earth after being convinced on our April 27th episode. Will his review disappoint or thrill an eager Lucé?

This week comedian Jen Saunderson, from Everything is Scary, saws and hacks her way to the podcast to discuss Sergio Martino’s Torso with Lucé. Can these two giallo fans convince skeptical Cozi to get into the genre that put black leather gloves on the map? If not, there’s a fancy scarf with his name on it!

Also discussed in this episode: High Fidelity, Joe Bob Briggs, Slashback Video, Vidéothèque, The New Beverly, and the importance of preserving physical media.

    Recommendations:

  • Seven Psychopaths (2012)

This week, Cozi extols the virtues of Martin McDonagh’s 2012 dark comedy Seven Psychopaths. Will Lucé, an avowed fan of McDonagh’s other films, be interested in seeing a movie that seems like just another guys-with-guns flick?

Also discussed in this episode: Six Shooter, billboards in L.A., The Ice Harvest, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, Nate Corddry, Raymond Carver, and manipulative trailers.

Starring real life punk band Guitar Wolf, Wild Zero will take you on a bonkers ride filled with gore, fire, and radical acceptance. Will Cozi be convinced to take the magic whistle, or does he shun the power of Rock’n’Roll?
