Ascites is the buildup of fluid inside of the abdomen. Typically this is due to Liver disease and the most common cause of the liver damage is due to Cirrhosis caused by alcohol. There are certainly other medical conditions that can cause Ascites. It could also be from a type of cancer, or inflammation (infectious causes such as hepatitis or Tuberculosis or noninfectious diseases such as an autoimmune related process affecting the liver). Other causes include: heart disease, pancreatic issues, Liver Vein blockages, and even some dialysis patients will develop ascites.
