On this episode of ScaleUp Radio, I’m speaking to Martyn and Emma Canning from Cannins Exterior Cleaning. There is a difference between their name and the name of the company, and you’ll find out why at the beginning of the episode.

 

 They are a company that, as the name suggests, deal in cleaning of exterior windows, gutters, conservatory roofs, solar panels, driveways…. In fact, if it’s outside of the house, or the office - they’ll clean it. So, don’t stay still for too long when they’re around!

 

Cannins are celebrating their tenth year in business and they have grown from when Martyn was literally going round with a bucket and a mop to now having 4 people that are going out in their own vans and doing the work with Martyn. So, they’re progressing nicely through their scale up journey. In fact, you’ll hear their plans for future growth during our conversation.

 

As always, we covered a lot of ground during our chat, including:

 

 - Know your strengths. Through trial and error Emma found out that she is more suited to admin than the physical side of the business. Realise what it is you are good at, and put your energy into that aspect of the business.

 - Recruitment isn’t easy. You’ll hear how frustrating Martyn and Emma find recruiting; getting the right people in for the business - without it affecting the day-to-day running of the business too much.

 - The difficulty in creating your pricing structure. Do you charge by the job, on a retainer, a subscription model? 

 

What is evident throughout this episode is just how committed Martyn and Emma are to the success of whatever business they’re in. They’ve got a great entrepreneurial drive which makes for a fascinating listen.
