I think we are all aware of the changing times around us. Farmers and ranchers are some of the most trusting people on earth. But it doesn’t seem that everyone whom we deal with has our best interests in mind.

Yesterday I shared from the Farmer’s Almanac that the ‘dog’ in ‘Dog Days of Summer’ was in reference to, the brightest star in the sky, Sirius which is a part of the Greater Dog constellation.

Thus, the term Dog Days of Summer came to mean the 20 days before and 20 days after this alignment of Sirius with the Sun—July 3 to August 11 each year.

We expected another big increase in the cost of fertilizer to feed our crops. The U.S. International Trade Commission voted to approve new increased duties on imports of ammonium nitrate from Russia and Trinidad and Tobago. Those countries export to us more than 80% of the nitrogen fertilizer that we use. Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and more than 80 members of Congress sent a letter urging the ITC to suspend the process. No more tariffs. Suspension was approved. Thank you.

According to the Farmer’s Almanac, “the “Dog Days” of summer are from July 3 to August 11 each year. They’re usually the hottest and most unbearable days of the season. We often hear about the “Dog Days” of summer, but few know where the expression originated. Some think it’s a reference to the hot, sultry days that are “not fit for a dog.”

Beating the heat can be tough during these “Dog Days of Summer.” Thankfully, it is National Ice Cream Month, so we have to celebrate!

The days have been long, hot, and dry with bursts of damaging storms across most of these parts. I saw where the National Weather Service in North Platte, NE had posted that they have recorded a record number of days over 100 degrees this summer and let’s face it, we are still facing a whole lot more summer.
