Mental illness is one of those things we're aware of, but don't seem to know that much about. Yet research suggests as many as 1 in 4 people are affected with some sort of mental disorder.
It's much more prevalent than you may have imagined.
Our guest today, Cristóbal Krusen was blessed with a beautiful boy. A gifted athlete with "dollar signs on his feet" as one of his high school coaches described him, Daniel began to show signs of severe mental illness, and was eventually diagnosed with schizo affective disorder, (which we know as schizophrenia.)
In this episode, Cristóbal shares the many emotions he and his family have endured through Daniel's ordeal, and how a full reliance on God and His church have allowed him to endure to the present day.
A gifted filmmaker by profession, Cristóbal has just completed a brand new film titled Let Me Have My Son. In this episode, Cristóbal opens up about his own journey of personal struggle and eventual victory over his own fears and shame.
And you'll definitely want to stick around to the end to hear an encouraging development in Daniel's recovery!
In this episode with Cris, you'll learn:
-Discovering Cristóbal’s son suffers mental illness, and the aftermath which followed...06:30
-Christianity is not a "quick fix" to the trials we experience in life...11:45
-The one thing Cristóbal wishes viewers to take away from his film, Let Me Have My Son...15:00
-The many reactions and emotions experienced in the wake of Daniel's mental illness...19:15
-God is love; allow Him to hold your hand while walking through these trials...25:30
-Start with prayer if you sincerely desire to get to the other side of the trial...31:30
-Follow the tears, and you'll find the source of your comfort...37:10
-One word or phrase Cristóbal would use to describe who he is...40:30
-And much more...

Cristóbal Krusen was born and raised in Tampa, Florida, the third of four children. Early in life, he showed a keen interest in literature, reading many of the classics while still in grade school and cherishing the ambition that one day he would become a writer. He entered Harvard University in 1971, majoring in English literature, intent on making his mark as a poet and novelist. A growing interest in photography and filmmaking, however, led him to transfer to New York University where he changed majors and graduated with a BFA in Film and Television in 1976. He later attended Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California where he received his MFA in Film in 1989.
Cristóbal founded Messenger Films in 1988 and has worked as a writer/director of film and television ever since, helming productions in more than twenty countries. He is best known for Final Solution, More Than Dreams, Undaunted, Sabina K. and most recently, Let Me Have My Son. Over the last several years, Cristóbal has also begun fulfilling his childhood dream of becoming a writer. He is the author of Undaunted, They Were Christians, and Let Me Have My Son.
Working in multiple languages as a filmmaker, Cristóbal is known for a poetic visual style and the ability to draw intimate performances from actors. Above all, he is a “storyteller” who delights to engage his audience while addressing the deepest needs of the human heart.
From the Director:
“Let Me Have My Son is based on my personal experience coming to grips with my firstborn son’s struggles with severe mental illness. Daniel has suffered. His family has suffered. Yet all our troubles and heartache shall be redeemed. Of that I am sure. The hope of the resurrection is not a consolation prize; it is the cornerstone of the Christian faith and represents the very heartbeat of our movie.
Let Me Have My Son is not a documentary, nor an effort to promote the latest scientific breakthrough or miracle cure for the scourge of mental illness. Nor is it our intention with the film to stir up controversy for the sake of controversy or advocate for sweeping changes in the mental healthcare system – even where change in the system might be indicated. More than anything else, Let Me Have My Son is intended as a heartfelt expression of the longing we all have as human beings to make sense of our greatest pain and suffering. I can speak from personal experience that medicine alone cannot solve the problem of mental illness. Indeed, if we are looking for doors of healing and understanding to open in this life only, we are setting ourselves up for disappointment beyond words.
According to WHO (World Health Organization), mental disorders affect one of four people worldwide. And let’s be real… This is an issue probably close to you as well, at least to some degree. Maybe it’s not in your immediate family… Perhaps it’s your cousin… an aunt or uncle far away… the neighbor’s son across the street. The question becomes what do we do when faced with a situation as intractable as severe mental illness? Our approach in Let Me Have My Son is to venture down a spiritual path, bringing hope and empathy to the hurting.”

God never wastes our pain, says our guest on today's episode.
Craig Brown grew up masking deep inner pain. Always pressured to put on a face of "the perfect family," Craig lacked an outlet to express the pains and insecurities that all children experience. The turn to drugs in 1980's Washington D.C. was not a surprising one in hindsight.
After breaking free of his shame, addiction, and hyper focus on self, Craig focuses on helping Christians look beyond the superficial smiles they see at Sunday services. To be more aware of the struggles that we all face, and how to go beyond a 12-step sobriety program, but to seek spiritual renewal.
In this interview with Craig, you'll hear:
-Craig operated in a pit of darkness before confronting his fears...04:15
-You'll never change until your pain is greater than your fear of changing...09:10
-Your entire life structure is focused on self when battling addiction...14:15
-Go to church to heal, not to hide...17:15
-How to become more aware of the struggles behind the smiles you see every Sunday at church...19:30
-We need to have the courage to be a safe space for those dealing with mental health issues...23:50
-Recognize darkness and depression in those among you, and take the action they need...27:00
-And much more...

Our guest on today's episode has been called the "Billy Graham of Iran" by Joel Rosenberg.
Dr. Hormoz Shariat grew up in a Muslim household in Iran, and found himself wondering "what does all this mean?" They recited the prayers day after day, yet there was no inward stirring.
Hormoz got a bitter taste of what the Islamic religion is capable of by a government that embraces it as its official religion when his brother was murdered by the regime two years after being jailed for what would be regarded as a misdemeanor crime in America.
Rather than despising his brother's murderers, Hormoz used the power of his faith in Jesus to minister to his fellow Iranians through live broadcasts on the state-sponsored television stations.
This interview will inspire you to take action in the face of overwhelming evil - and to acknowledge the true source of evil in this world, showing mercy toward those who are misled into doing Satan's deeds.
We invite you to scroll down a bit and see how you can get a copy of Hormoz' book Iran's Great Awakening, and receive text updates on what is going on with the Iran Alive ministries!
In this interview with Hormoz, you'll learn:
-Family life in Iran, and finding Jesus in an Islamic culture...06:10
-The moment Hormoz found Jesus through "researching" Jesus...08:30
-A janitor at Hormoz' wife's work leads both of them to Jesus, and saves their marriage...13:30
-So many Muslims are indifferent to religion in general - but is a vibrant spiritual life...15:21
-Hormoz answers the call to minister to Muslims...18:45
-Why Hormoz loves Muslims, in spite of atrocities committed by the Islamic government of Iran...21:10
-The "logical" reason Muslims are so resistant to Christianity...25:45
-Incredible conversion stories and miracles witnessed in person by Dr. Hormoz...31:30
-How Iran Alive is utilizing artificial intelligence as a ministry tool...42:16
-How you can pray for Iran and Iran Alive Ministries...45:45

Iran's Great Awakening, by Dr. Hormoz Shariat (Get a copy for free when you make a contribution to Iran Alive)
About our guest:
Dr. Hormoz Shariat is the founder of Iran Alive Ministries, which utilizes satellite TV to broadcast Christian programming to a potential audience of 130 million in Iran and the Middle East. Dr. Shariat has been called “the Billy Graham of Iran,” by best-selling American Israeli author, Joel Rosenberg.
Iran Alive uses modern technology to share the Gospel, train believers and fuel a discipleship-making movement. Dr. Shariat’s ministry broadcasts life-giving messages 24/7 to some of the darkest regions of the world, spreading the gospel of Christ to oppressed Islamic-run Iran. Where it is illegal to gather for a Christian church service, the 24/7 broadcast steps in, connecting and discipling the underground Church. Dr. Shariat has an audience of an estimated 6 million daily viewers (and 20 million weekly viewers) of his satellite program in Iran.
With call centers, their 4:12 training school, college discipleship, Bible smuggling, and more — the ministry supports the movement of God in Iran. Iran’s population is about 84 million people and only about 2 million people identify as Christians. The church in Iran is one of the most persecuted in the world due to severe governmental restrictions on practicing Christianity. No church gatherings are permitted in Iran. Bibles are prohibited and difficult to find in Iran. Hopelessness and despair have caused the suicide rate and drug addictions to skyrocket.
As a solution, Iran Alive Ministries provides:
Evangelism: Satellite TV allows for 24/7 broadcasts of Gospel messages, biblical teachings, and Christian content across Iran and other Farsi-speaking regions like Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
Discipleship: The 4:12 Discipleship School provides teaching, training, and mobilizes new Iranian believers for the work of ministry.
Community: Iran Alive connects new believers to underground house churches and online churches in Iran.
Bible Distribution: Bibles are smuggled in and distributed to believers through the underground church network.
Dr. Shariat has been doing ministry among Muslim-born Iranians as a Muslim background believer for the last 40 years. Iran Alive Ministries was birthed 22 years, ago and is using modern technology to share the Gospel, train believers, and fuel a discipleship-making movement in Iran. Thousands of Iranians are coming to Christ each year through this ministry. In his book, “Iran's Great Awakening” Dr. Shariat shares his spiritual journey out of Islam to Christianity, Biblical prophesies about Iran, and the strategies to transform a nation like Iran.

Fear knows your greatest potential, and if you allow it to guide your decisions, you'll not reach your potential. You'll probably reach the polar opposite of your potential in fact.

Divorce. It's the last thing any married person wants to hear or consider. Yet, it's sometimes inevitable. The other party sometimes just loses interest in the other person, loses sight of the vision they once had for their marriage.
What are you to do?
Amanda Carroll's former husband told her one night he was leaving her and their three children. Her response? "We're out of milk." Survival mode kicked into high gear; her first and only thought was the welfare of her children - and they were out of milk.
Suddenly the unthinkable was reality: starting over with the shame of divorce hanging over her head, all the while finding success in one of the top media markets in the U.S.
But rather than being judged and shamed by her superiors, she found grace and willingness to help. Amanda reframed her thinking. Rather than being "that woman" who is salvaging an identity from a failed marriage, she was given the opportunity to start fresh with her life - right when most of her peers are in the middle of theirs, sometimes in their own unhappy marriages.
We hope that in listening to our conversation with Amanda Carroll, you'll come away encouraged and energized, ready to "Brave Life" and kick those sorrows in the teeth!
In this episode, you'll learn:
-Amanda's early faith journey and getting involved in faith-based media...06:00
-The providential leap to prominence in the #4 media market in the U.S...11:00
-"We're out of milk": survival mode in the midst of personal crisis...14:45
-Grace, not judgment, is shown at the darkest hour...19:12
-Reorienting during an unexpected "pit stop" in life...22:30
-"This is God." Landing the dream job by a miracle...28:45

-Putting God into your life even, no especially when you don't know how things will work out...38:00

"Serve God," they said.
"It will be fun!" they said.
"Your life will be infinitely better," they said.
While we don't really know who "they" are, we do know that serving God is sometimes touted as a blissful experience, that once you do so you'll never experience pain or heartache.
The reality could not be further from that. Sometimes we put our faith in God, only to have a tragedy occur such as the loss of a child. The mother of our guest, Richard Ronsisvalle, had that very thing happen, and nearly lost her fledgling faith as a result. But she resolved to strengthen her faith, and in turn led every last one of her 11 children to God.
As a very young man, Richard heard the call to preach the gospel. This meant turning down many offers from some of the biggest studios in America who wanted to record his beautiful baritone voice so he could fulfill his calling.
Service to God meant forsaking everything dear to attend 24/7 to his wife who had developed dementia and Alzheimer's. While finding a fine nursing home would have been convenient, and on the surface would have allowed Richard to perform his ministry, he chose the inconvenient (and far less lucrative) path of honoring the scriptural admonition for a man to love his wife, even as Christ loved the church.
We hope you'll listen to today's episode and find courage to persevere through any challenge you're enduring and ultimately find true joy in obeying God over pursuing any personal or earthly ambition!
In this episode, you'll learn:
-How Richard's parents had a marriage arranged by their parents, and truly by God...05:30
-A special child is born into the Ronsisvalle family, but sadly passes at age 3...12:15
-How God used the tragedy of baby Jimmy to help Richard's mother find a breakthrough in faith...15:00
-Never underestimate the power of the presence of God while at church in person with other believers...20:30
-Why Richard turned down multiple recording contracts with some of the biggest platforms in America because of his calling to preach the gospel...24:00
-Richard's current ministry is borne from a calling shared by a pastor friend....29:21
-How Richard met his wife - while trying to set her up with his older brother...35:06
-Unconditional love illustrated through Richard's care for his wife while she was seriously ill...40:25
-A call to men to love our wives and walk in obedience, even when it appears God has abandoned us....47:30
-A prayer for our listeners to be strengthened in the Spirit...53:00

Decisions, Decisions. We make thousands of them everyday.
Some decisions are trivial. Some will affect your life forever, for better or worse.
Believe it or not, some of those seemingly minor decisions turn into major life events. Like having a drink and you eventually become an alcoholic; or trying out a cigar and getting hooked and eventually developing lung or throat cancer.
Or perhaps witnessing a crime or injustice taking place and you choose to do nothing. That's a decision too, one that may affect your conscience for a long time.
In this episode, we share with you what we believe are solid principles when it comes to making decisions. With anecdotes from our own lives, and sound teaching from the Scriptures, our hope is to encourage you to make decisions decisively, with the authority granted you from on high when you trust in Jesus as the Lord of your life!
In this episode, you'll learn:
-So many decisions we make in a day...02:19
