Dan Novak talks about growing up on rivers in the Czechoslovakia (now Czech Republic), outdoor space available to us in our Northern Michigan backyard, couch surfing, public land that we take for granted, the final river to paddle in his alphabetical list, seeing others accomplishments as encouragement, the ever-changing character of rivers, being young in mind by focussing on the next thing, outdoor recreation as self inflicting struggle to feel alive, doing something for yourself that hasn't been done yet, crossing Michigan's upper peninsula by boat, Lake Superior to Lake Michigan by Eau Train and Whitefish Rivers, getting youth into active outdoor recreation, the movie Rapa Nui as inspiration for the Power Island Race, and what the name RaceTC means.
