As people, we tend to make things worse in our heads than they actually are. We can give a presentation and we could develop an end of the world scenario if we don't perform well. You can ask someone out and they say no, but guess what, your life will continue onwards. At least you took a shot and the worst outcome was just a no, not a complete failure of your life.
By writing down the things that could go wrong on a piece of paper, it can give you the opportunity to really analyze the situation and see if you're being rational or not. More times than not, you're being irrational with your thoughts. If you need to follow-up with someone, don’t worry about sending out multiple emails to get their attention. Most of them are probably happy that you’re following up. You’re not going to spoil the relationship unless you’re being a jerk in your responses.
So when you think of a catastrophe scenario for things that haven’t happened yet, the only person that you're really hurting is yourself and that's a self-inflicted wound.
