The Unfolding Enneagram

Your Enneagram Home Base

Listen Later

We talk a lot about identity in regards to the Enneagram. We constantly say we are NOT our type or our number.

I recently talked to a friend who has just begun peeking at the Enneagram, and she said, “I see a little of myself in all the numbers.” I said ABSOLUTELY. That’s how we should approach this journey!

BUT the truth is - there is a place we feel more connected. It’s our ‘home base’ - where we have our roots. I was born in Texas, so that makes me a TEXAN even though I moved away from Texas at 19 and have lived in Georgia much longer than I lived in Texas. In fact, if someone asks me where I’m from, I say, “Georgia.”   There are a lot of labels we identify with through and through but we know we are actually a compilation of all these things. I’ve been influenced by so many people and places as everyone has. This is why NO ONE is just their Enneagram type. Nature and nurture create who we are, and we continue to evolve to where we actually can’t identify with our own type in lower stages of development.

So while I find my roots in Type 7 I have truly found the beauty of being in the presence of all the other types, learning how our differences create an amazing landscape - like this planet we live on where the diversity is almost indescribable. So if you want to feel like a world traveler, get to know your family and your friends. I mean truly know them. Ask them to tell you their stories - then listen. You just might discover, like Maya Angelou says in her poem 'Human Family', "We are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike."
