    COMMENTARY

Reviews for Alcazar AudioWorks' production of The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood

Narrator David Thorn breathes fresh life into the classic tales of Robin Hood in this frolic through Sherwood Forest. A faithful rendition of his noble deeds displays the robber's timeless appeal, overcoming some archaic language and countless references to ale. The songs and ballads, ably performed by Thorn, add to the production's merit. Individual exploits within this extensive audiobook create plenty of stopping places, as listeners meander leisurely through medieval England. Thorn's booming voice chronicles the excitement of archery matches and skirmishes with the Sheriff of Nottingham, which make Robin Hood a perennial favorite with adventure lovers. Despite an unassuming package, this audiobook is a stirring retelling of a well-loved story. C.A. © AudioFile 2007, Portland, Maine [Published: JUN/ JUL 07]

    Jolly good

Having read, listened to, and viewed multiple versions of the Robin Hood story, this is, to me, the jolliest version. It must be the writing that was used for the Errol Flynn movie, Robin and Marion, and many others since. However, this reading is the best so far. Fun adventures, well told, and well read.

    Listener Review - Audible.com

    Good voices. Great pacing.

Our kids (ages 6 up to 14) enjoyed this, asking for it in the car, snagging the Garmin Nuvi to listen in the house.

    Summary:

Published after his death, Dickens brilliantly brings to life a broad cast of colorful characters in the never solved mysterious disappearance of one Edwin Drood, all set in the rural hamlet of Cloisterham around the Cathedral close.

The Mystery of Edwin Drood is Charles Dickens's brilliant contribution to the field of crime and detection. In fact, the novel is even more of a mystery than Dickens himself intended, for he died before completing it, making it a favorite of literary detectives.

Against a background of opium dens, nocturnal graveyard visits, and moldering monastic crypts, Dickens weaves a tightly knit plot centered on the ominous disappearance of young Edwin Drood. Suspected of foul murder are John Jasper, a drug-addicted choir-master who hungers after Drood's fiancée, and Neville Landless, a Ceylonese who had previously quarreled violently with the missing man. With dark, brooding atmosphere and masterful characterization, Dickens is at the height of his powers in this final work.

    AUTHOR

Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was born in Landport, Portsmouth, England, the second of eight children in a family continually plagued by debt. A legacy brought release from the nightmare of debtors' prison and child labor and afforded him a few years of formal schooling. He worked as an attorney's clerk and newspaper reporter until his early writings brought him the amazing success that was to be his for the remainder of his life. He was the most popular English novelist of the Victorian era, and he remains popular, responsible for some of English literature's most iconic characters.

    COMMENTARY

Reviews for Alcazar AudioWorks' production of The Mystery of Edwin Drood

David Thorn reads Dickens's last, incomplete, novel, a dark romance involving a disappearance and possible murder, with a variety of voices and accents worthy of a multicast performance and an extraordinary range of color and expression. His reading, complex but neither forced nor affected, is both intimate and vivid, enlivening passages that might have been dull. One quibble: Some voices don't match Dickens's description. Thorn attempts the audacious tactic of maturing Drood and his betrothed, Rosa, by subtly altering their voices over time. He miscalculates only in starting them too callow and silly; by the time the change comes (and it succeeds remarkably), it's too little too late. A pity this is only a fragment. COMMENTARY

Reviews for Alcazar AudioWorks' production of Understood Betsy

Understood Betsy stands near the top of the list of our favorite read-alouds, and so I must admit it was with mingled anticipation and skepticism that we approached this book-on-CD set.

It had one thing in its favor, right away - the word ""unabridged"" on the cover. But could the reader do it justice?

The answer is a resounding, ""Yes!""

Alcazar AudioWorks has done a marvelous job of bringing Understood Betsy to CD. This CD set was an instant success at our house, from the cheerful man who introduces the book in general and each chapter in particular, to the charming music between chapters (our middle daughter just came into the room, especially to say, ""I like that music!"") to the magic of Bobbie Frohman's reading, bringing the story to life and giving each character an individual voice.

Understood Betsy is the story of Elizabeth Ann, an orphan who is torn from the only home she's known, from the tender care of her maiden aunts in the city.

    Publisher: Tantor Media

Genres: Mystery, Thriller & Horror, Espionage

    Summary:

With the same riveting historical narrative that made The Kitchen Boy a national bestseller and a book club favorite, Robert Alexander returns to revolutionary Russia for the harrowing tale of Rasputin's final days as told by his youthful and bold daughter, Maria. Interrogated by the Provisional Government on the details of her father's death, Maria vividly recounts a politically tumultuous Russia, where Rasputin's powerful influence over the throne are unsettling to all levels of society, and the threats to his life are no secret.

With vast conspiracies mounting against his father, Maria must struggle with the discovery of Rasputin's true nature-his unbridled carnal appetites, mysterious relationship with the Empress, rumors of involvement in secret religious cults-to save her father from his murderers. Swept away in a plot much larger than the death of one man, Maria fmds herself on the cusp of the Russian Revolution itself. With Rasputin's Daughter, Robert Alexander once again delivers an imaginative and compelling story, fashioned from one of history's most fascinating periods that, until now, has been virtually unexplored in fiction.

'The combination of Alexander's research and his rich characterizations produces an engaging historical fiction that offers a Rasputin who is neither beast nor saint, but merely, compellingly human.'-Publishers Weekly

    Publisher: Tantor Media

Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Biography & Memoir, Christianity, Religious & Inspirational

    Summary:

The 1950s was a boom time for the Catholic Church in America, with large families of devout members providing at least one son or daughter for a life of religious service. Boston was at the epicenter of this explosion, and Bill Manseau and Mary Doherty - two eager young parishioners from different towns - became part of a new breed of clergy, eschewing the comforts of homey parishes and choosing instead to minister to the inner-city poor. Peter Manseau's riveting evocation of his parents' parallel childhoods, their similar callings, their experiences in the seminary and convent, and how they met while tending to the homeless of Roxbury during the riot-prone 1960s is a page-turning meditation on the effect that love can have on profound faith.

Once married, the Manseaus continued to fight for Father Bill's right to serve the church as a priest, and it was into this situation that Peter and his siblings were born and raised to be good Catholics while they witnessed their father's personal conflict with the church's hierarchy. A multigenerational tale of spirituality, Vows also charts Peter's own calling, one which he tried to deny even as he felt compelled to consider the monastic life, toying with the idea of continuing a family tradition that stretches back over 300 years of Irish and French Catholic priests and nuns.

It is also in Peter's deft hands that we learn about a culture and a religion that has shaped so much of American life, affected generations of true believers, and withstood great turmoil. Vows is a compelling tale of one family's unshakable faith that to be called is to serve, however high the cost may be.

    Summary:

A Pilot's Dramatic Story of His Secret Missions Over Laos During the Vietnam War

Like Jarhead, We Were Soldiers Once..., and Young, John T. Halliday's combat memoir is gripping, novelistic, and startlingly candid, taking readers through the devastating trials and hard-won victories of flying in the Vietnam War.

The year is 1970, and John T. Halliday has just landed in the middle of the Vietnam War, primed to begin his assignment with the 606 Special Operations Squadron. But there's a catch: He's stationed in a kind of no-man's-land. No one on his base flies with ID, patches, or rank. Even as Richard Nixon firmly denies reporters' charges that the U.S. has forces in Laos, Halliday realizes that from his base in Thailand, he will be flying top-secret black ops night missions over the Laotian Ho Chi Minh Trail.

A naive yet thoughtful twenty-four-year-old, Halliday is utterly unprepared for the horrors of war. On his first mission, Halliday's aircraft dodges more than a thousand anti-aircraft shells. Nothing is as he expected-not the operations, not the way his shell-shocked fellow pilots look and act, and certainly not the squadron's daredevil, seat-of-one's-pants approach to piloting. But before long, Halliday has become one of those seasoned and shell-shocked pilots and finds himself in a desperate search for a way to elude certain death.

A powerhouse fusion of pathos and humor, brutal realism and intimate reflection, Flying Through Midnight is a landmark contribution to Vietnam War literature, revealing previously top-secret intelligence on the 606' s night missions. Fast-paced, thrilling, and bitingly intelligent, Halliday's writing illuminates it all: the heart-pounding air battles, the close friendships, the crippling fear, and the astonishing final escape that made the telling of it possible.
