Title: Sing a Song of Tuna Fish

    Author: Esme Raji Codell

    Narrator: Esme Raji Codell

    Format: Unabridged

    Length: 02:30:00

    Language: English

    Release date: 01-11-05

    Publisher: Listening Library (Audio)

Genres: Kids, Biography & Memoir, Health & Family

    Summary:

Esmé tells us about the night she and her mother became "egg vigilantes" against an illegally parked car; her freewheeling first school, where kids sat on sofas instead of at desks and could choose disco dancing instead of math; her dangerous neighborhood, which her father made seem friendly and wondrous; the Passover dinner when she stole a matzoh right out from under a rabbi; the awe-inspiring, life-threatening Chicago snowstorms; and lessons about love from tea-reading gypsies and Popeye cartoons.

In stories that perfectly evoke the perspective of her ten-year-old self, author Esmé Raji Codell demonstrates her gift for making the ordinary extraordinary, and the unusual familiar. SING A SONG OF TUNA FISH is a memoir of a Chicago childhood; a tribute to the art of attention; and most of all, a joyful listening experience for kids and families.

    Genres: Science Fiction & Fantasy

    Summary:

In the twenty-fifth century, humankind has spread throughout the galaxy, monitored by the watchful eye of the U.N. While divisions in race, religion, and class still exist, advances in technology have redefined life itself. Now, assuming one can afford the expensive procedure, a person's consciousness can be stored in a cortical stack at the base of the brain and easily downloaded into a new body (or 'sleeve') making death nothing more than a minor blip on a screen.

Ex-U.N. envoy Takeshi Kovacs has been killed before, but his last death was particularly painful. Dispatched one hundred eighty light-years from home, re-sleeved into a body in Bay City (formerly San Francisco, now with a rusted, dilapidated Golden Gate Bridge), Kovacs is thrown into the dark heart of a shady, far-reaching conspiracy that is vicious even by the standards of a society that treats 'existence' as something that can be bought and sold. For Kovacs, the shell that blew a hole in his chest was only the beginning. . . .

'Morgan's debut novel, the first in a series, combines noir mystery with ultra-high tech science to create a complex sf thriller. Featuring a hard-nosed antihero with his own sense of personal honor and ethics, this is highly recommended for sf collections.'-Library Journal

    AUTHOR

Henrietta Elizabeth Marshall (1867 - 1941) was a British author, most famous for her works of history for children.

For decades, Marshall's books were ubiquitous in schools and home libraries. Much of the popularity of her works stems from her talent for making history read like good storytelling.

    COMMENTARY

Reviews for Alcazar AudioWorks' production of Our Island Story, Volume 2

Our Island Story, Volume 2, Part 1 is the second part in Alcazar Audioworks' project to bring H.E. Marshall's history of Great Britain to audiobook form.

H.E. Marshall was a fine storyteller in her own right, and the two readers who alternate in the reading do a fine job, adding to the listener's interest. David Thorn's rich British accent suits his material well, and Bobbie Frohman contributes her usual warmth.

Our Island Story, Volume 2, Part 1 covers the span of years between 1066 (King Harold's reign before William the Conqueror arrived) and the Battle of Sluys in 1340, during the reign of Edward III. We were fascinated by details we hadn't heard in other history books. There were good and decent kings (not too many of these, it seems), along with men who would be king, and ruthless men who made us shudder to hear of their deeds in their attempts to gain power.

    Summary:

'This is a powerful tale of family, forgiveness, and acceptance of what life throws in our paths - but ultimately, with its almost painful realism, this is the finest depiction of war we've yet seen for young readers.' — KIRKUS REVIEWS (starred review)

AMARYLLIS. It was the name of the ship that ran aground on Singer Island, Florida, during a hurricane in 1965. It became a battle cry for Jimmy Staples and his older brother, Frank, and a code word for going surfing together. But now that eighteen-year-old Frank is off battling the enemy (and his own addictive demons) in Vietnam and fifteen-year-old Jimmy is left to deal with the repercussions at home, 'Amaryllis' takes on an ominous new meaning - a symbol of what happens when life places the unexpected in our paths.

Craig Crist-Evans has written a wrenching novel of a family whose internal battles chase one son away - into the clutches of a war and an enemy he could never have imagined. Told both from a soldier's view and by the brother he leaves behind, Amaryllis is an ideal choice for students learning about the Vietnam era, or for any listener curious about the reality of war.
