    AUTHOR

    L. Frank Baum

Lyman Frank Baum (1856-1919), born in Chittenango, New York, was a journalist, dramatist, and writer best known for his fantasies about the land of Oz, the first being The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900). The success of this book led to his writing thirteen sequels. He wrote about sixty books in all, mostly for children.

    COMMENTARY

Reviews for Alcazar AudioWorks' production of The Patchwork Girl of Oz

"Alcazar Audio Works provides a delightfully directed full-cast reading of Baum's seventh novel set in Oz. A poor Munchkin boy named Ojo teams up with Ozma, Dorothy, the Wizard, a quilted patchwork girl named Scraps, and the rest of the wondrous characters to save Ojo's uncle from a wicked wizard's spell. The uncredited narrator reads with a beautiful English accent as a team of actors plays the colorful characters. Without using any sound effects, the cast brings the characters and Baum's story to life. One character, a lazy man of Quadling country, is given a surfer-dude accent, and Baum's words are updated to amusing but incongruous effect. Listeners of all ages will enjoy this whimsical fantasy. Format: Abridged

    Language: English

    Release date: 12-28-98

    Publisher: Penguin Audio

Genres: Science & Technology, Computers, Technology & Engineering

    Summary:

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • Bold futurist Ray Kurzweil, author of The Singularity Is Near, offers a framework for envisioning the future of machine intelligence—“a book for anyone who wonders where human technology is going next” (The New York Times Book Review).

“Kurzweil offers a thought-provoking analysis of human and artificial intelligence and a unique look at a future in which the capabilities of the computer and the species that invented it grow ever closer.”—BILL GATES

Imagine a world where the difference between man and machine blurs, where the line between humanity and technology fades, and where the soul and the silicon chip unite. This is not science fiction. This is the twenty-first century according to Ray Kurzweil, the “restless genius” (The Wall Street Journal), “ultimate thinking machine” (Forbes), and inventor of the most innovative and compelling technology of our era. In his inspired hands, life in the new millennium no longer seems daunting. Instead, it promises to be an age in which the marriage of human sensitivity and artificial intelligence fundamentally alters and improves the way we live.

More than just a list of predictions, Kurzweil’s prophetic blueprint for the future guides us through the inexorable advances that will result in:

    • Computers exceeding the memory capacity and computational ability of the human brain (with human-level capabilities not far behind)

    • Relationships with automated personalities who will be our teachers, companions, and lovers

    • Information fed straight into our brains along direct neural pathways

Eventually, the distinction between humans and computers will have become sufficiently blurred that when the machines claim to be conscious, we will believe them.

    Language: English

    Release date: 10-01-98

    Publisher: Penguin Audio

    Genres: History, Military, Russia

    Summary:

The Battle of Stalingrad was not only the psychological turning point of World War II: it also changed the face of modern warfare

Historians and reviewers worldwide have hailed Antony Beevor's magisterial Stalingrad as the definitive account of World War II's most harrowing battle.

In August 1942, Hitler's huge Sixth Army reached the city that bore Stalin's name. In the five-month siege that followed, the Russians fought to hold Stalingrad at any cost; then, in an astonishing reversal, encircled and trapped their Nazi enemy. This battle for the ruins of a city cost more than a million lives. Stalingrad conveys the experience of soldiers on both sides, fighting in inhuman conditions, and of civilians trapped on an urban battlefield. Antony Beevor has interviewed survivors and discovered completely new material in a wide range of German and Soviet archives, including prisoner interrogations and reports of desertions and executions. As a story of cruelty, courage, and human suffering, Stalingrad is unprecedented and unforgettable.

    Summary:

“To read On the Road but not Visions of Cody is to take a nice sightseeing tour but to forgo the spectacular rapids of Jack Kerouac’s wildest writings.”—The New York Times Book Review

“The centerpiece of all [Kerouac’s] novels.”—The Washington Post

Originally written in 1951–1952, Visions of Cody was an underground classic by the time it was finally published in 1972, three years after Kerouac’s death. Utilizing a radical, experimental form (“the New Journalism fifteen years early,” as Dennis McNally noted in Desolate Angel), Kerouac examines his own New York life in a collection of colorful stream-of-consciousness essays. Always transfixed by Neal Cassady—here named Cody Pomeray—along with Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs, Kerouac also explores the feelings he had for a man who inspired much of his work.

Transcribing taped conversations between members of their group as they took drugs and drank, Visions of Cody reveals an intimate portrait of people caught up in destructive relationships with substances, and one another, capturing the members of the Beat Generation in the years before any label had been affixed to them.
