    Author: Theodore H. Schwartz

    Narrator: Sean Pratt

    Format: Unabridged

    Length: 16:31:27

    Language: English

    Release date: 08-13-24

    Publisher: Penguin Audio

Genres: Biography & Memoir, Science & Technology, Medicine

    Summary:

“If you are at all curious about the brain or the surgeons who operate on it, Gray Matters is a must read and Dr. Theodore Schwartz is the perfect guide, a master brain surgeon and superbly talented writer. I have not read a better biography of our shared profession, and in Schwartz's talented hands, the most enigmatic 3 1/2 pounds of tissue in the known universe comes to light in remarkable and revelatory ways.”

—Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN Chief Medical Correspondent, and New York Times and #1 Wall Street Journal bestselling author of Keep Sharp: Build a Better Brain at Any Age

A popular biography of brain surgery, by one of its preeminent practitioners

We’ve all heard the phrase “it’s not brain surgery.” But what exactly is brain surgery? It’s a profession that is barely a hundred years old and profoundly connects two human beings, but few know how it works, or its history. How did early neurosurgeons come to understand the human brain—an extraordinarily complex organ that controls everything we do, and yet at only three pounds is so fragile? And how did this incredibly challenging and lifesaving specialty emerge?

In this warm, rigorous, and deeply insightful book, Dr. Theodore H. Schwartz explores what it’s like to hold the scalpel, wield the drill, extract a tumor, fix a bullet hole, and remove a blood clot—when every second can mean life or death. Drawing from the author’s own cases, plus media, sports, and government archives, this seminal work delves into all the brain-related topics that have long-consumed public curiosity, like what really happened to JFK, President Biden’s brain surgery, and the NFL’s management of CTE. Dr. Schwartz also surveys the field’s latest incredible advances and discusses the philosophical questions of the unity of the self and the existence of free will.

A neurosurgeon as well as a professor of neurosurgery at Weill Cornell Medicine, one of the busiest and most highly ranked neurosurgery centers in the world, Dr. Schwartz tells this story like no one else could. Told through anecdote and clear explanation, this is the ultimate cultural and scientific history of a literally mind-blowing human endeavor, one that cuts to the core of who we are.

    Length: 4:01:42

    Language: English

    Release date: 08-12-24

    Publisher: Authors Republic

Genres: Fiction & Literature, Family Life

    Summary:

While researching my ancestry I was intrigued to discover that an ancestor had been widowed twice and married three times with three children before the age of 26.

William was born in Somerset in 1828, one of generations going back to 1722 and beyond skilled with woodcarving and model making. He was a great inventor, engineer and designer, and adventurous, too. He migrated to New Zealand in 1858, and then to Melbourne in 1885, his family then 10 strong. This is a fictionalised account of his life.

To this day, William's genes are evidenced in the youngest generation of his line. This book is a tribute to past and future members in our family who carry William's genes.

Meg Lawrence was born in Richmond, Victoria, Australia, in 1930, a second generation Australian. She inherited her father and grandfather's love of the ocean, and crewed on many ocean races. Her day job was in advertising, producing commercials and documentaries for radio and television.

Meg was the first Australian woman to report on life in Japan after the war. She also worked in Mexico, Fiji, and many Australian locations. In 2008 she produced a film explaining the biosphere which was presented to UNESCO in Paris in 2010.

She has lived in Noosa Heads, Queensland, since 1977. Between 1989 and 2019 she was the first and last chairman of the Noosa Federation of the Arts, for which she received a Member of the Order of Australia.

Suffering from macular degeneration, which makes reading difficult, prompted Meg to publish in audio.

    Summary:

From debut author Erin Becker comes an action-packed but tender novel about first romance, queer identity, and learning how to be brave when it matters the most.

On the soccer field, Magic Mel is in her element. She’s ready to lead her team to victory at the city championship in her new role as captain. Off the field, however, is a totally different story. Mel can’t get a handle on her class presentation, her friend group has completely dissolved, and her ex-friend-current-teammate, Tory, is being the worst. The only place she feels like herself is in her text conversations where she shares her secret poetry with BTtoYouPlease.

Tory McNally, on the other hand, is keeping everything together, thank you very much. So what if her mom is more preoccupied with her craft projects and new husband than her, or that she’s down to one IRL friend because of annoying, overly peppy “Magic” Mel? She’s perfectly fine, and even when she maybe isn’t, she’s got NotEmilyD to text with.

As the championships loom closer, everything around Mel and Tory starts to get more and more complicated: the dynamics on the field, the rift between their friend group, and, as they connect anonymously online, maybe even their feelings for each other . . .
