Desmond Lachman joined AEI after serving as a managing director and chief emerging market economic strategist at Salomon Smith Barney. He previously served as deputy director in the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) Policy Development and Review Department and was active in staff formulation of IMF policies. Mr. Lachman has written extensively on the global economic crisis, the U.S. housing market bust, the U.S. dollar, and the strains in the euro area. At AEI, Mr. Lachman is focused on the global macroeconomy, global currency issues, and the multilateral lending agencies.

EJ is a research fellow for Regional Economics in the Center for Data Analysis at The Heritage Foundation. His research focuses on fiscal and monetary policy.

His work has been featured with a variety of news outlets including Daily Caller, Fox News and Fox Business, Wall Street Journal, National Review, CNBC, Washington Times, The Center Square, Washington Examiner, Breitbart, The Federalist, and others. He is also a frequent guest on, and official economist of, WMAL’s Vince Coglianese Show, heard in the greater DC area.

EJ’s research has also been featured with numerous think tanks and institutes including the Committee to Unleash Prosperity, where he is a senior fellow. Previously, he was an economist at Texas Public Policy Foundation, an economic consultant for FreedomWorks, and has taught courses ranging from labor economics to money and banking. EJ holds master’s and doctoral degrees in economics.

Jane M. Orient, M.D. is executive director of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons and president of Doctors for Disaster Preparedness.

Jane M. Orient, M.D., has appeared on major television and radio networks in the U.S. speaking about issues related to healthcare reform. She is executive director of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, a voice for patients’ and physicians’ independence since 1943. She is also president of Doctors for Disaster Preparedness and chairman of the Public Health Committee of the Pima County (Arizona) Medical Society.

Dr. Orient is editor of AAPS News, the Doctors for Disaster Preparedness Newsletter, and Civil Defense Perspectives, and is managing editor of the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons. She is a policy advisor to The Heartland Institute.

Chief economist for the National Federation of Independent Business since
1971, William C. Dunkelberg is an internationally respected authority on small
business, entrepreneurship, consumer behavior, consumer credit and
government policy.
Most recently, he was Professor of Economics at the School of Business and
Management, Temple University, where he served as Dean from 1987 through
1994 and as Director of the Center for the Advancement and Study of
Entrepreneurship.
His prior economics teachings were at the Krannert Graduate School of Management, Purdue
University; the Graduate School of Business, Stanford University; and the Survey Research
Center at the University of Michigan, where he graduated from with B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees
in Economics.
Dr. Dunkelberg has also served as an adviser to the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, was a member of
the Consumer Advisory Council of the Federal Reserve System in 1989 for a two-year term, and,
according to The New York Times, was on the short list for vice president of the Federal Reserve
Board.

Derek Kreifels is the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of the State Financial Officers Foundation (SFOF), the only nonprofit in the U.S. that combines ground-breaking free-market research with a strong network of states’ treasurers, auditors, and other financial officers, to actively sustain the health of each state’s economic outlook.

Before co-founding SFOF in 2012, Kreifels spent five years as Assistant State Treasurer of Kansas, where he oversaw the state’s college savings plan, ABLE plan, debt and bond management, and pension investments. During his tenure, his office processed over $21B annually, and he managed 42 employees with an annual budget of over $3.5M.

Kreifels attended Kansas State University, received his undergraduate degree from Wichita State University, and his Master’s degree from Friends University in Wichita. He lends his leadership to several boards and nonprofits. He and his wife Melanie are diehard Kansas City Chiefs fans, enjoy excellent Kansas City BBQ, and love spending time with family.

Joel Griffith is a research fellow in the Thomas A. Roe Institute for Economic Policy Studies at The Heritage Foundation.

Joel earned his juris doctor at the Chapman University Dale E. Fowler School of Law, with a dual emphasis in Alternative Dispute Resolution and Federal Income Taxation; he is currently a member of the State Bar of California. At Chapman, he was a charter board member and treasurer of the Investment Law Society, served as a charter member and vice-president of the Chapman chapter of the California Republican Lawyers Association, and competed on both the mock trial and mediation teams.

Following law school, Joel managed an equities trading account utilizing market neutral strategies. As an attorney, he worked with Heideman Nudelman Kalik, PC in Washington, D.C. During the 2012 presidential primary season, Joel worked for a campaign as MI state field director, OH state operations director, and WA parliamentarian/assistant delegate strategist.

Prior to Heritage, he worked as a researcher for a former member of  The Wall Street Journal editorial board. Joel also was Deputy Research Director at the National Association of  Counties. Most recently he was Director of the Center for State Fiscal Reform at the American Legislative Exchange Council. Numerous media outlets have featured Joel’s written analysis, including The Hill, The Wall Street Journal, Forbes online, Investor’s Business Daily, The Washington Times, the Orange County Register, and Times of Israel. He also made appearances on Fox News and Fox Business News.
