Your Healing Playground - Dr. Tina Koopersmith  The universe gives us lessons and experiences that likely are guidance, like a GPS, for how to guide us through life. For many years, the ancients had practices that reinforced these lessons. In modern times, we have quickly moved away from the structures and guidelines that were gifts from the universe and instead we have been schooled by man made structures and  educational systems. Like artificial foods and sweeteners, these newer systems drive our nervous systems further and further away from health and wellness. Prior to birth, we trust the universe to grow us from seed to fully formed baby and even to deliver us from the womb to life on earth as an infant. On the day of our birth as we emerge from darkness into light, the GPS navigation system is ALIVE, BREATHE, and CRY. Indeed with our transition and separation from mom, we quickly forget to trust the universe and notice we are small and helpless and REQUIRE emotions and connection to ensure our survival. Emotions become the tool to connect with our tribe to ensure collaboration and survival. Every morning as we arise from deep slumber, we recapitulate our birth--from darkness to light... and as we awake there is a cortisol rush which activates our survival sympathetic nervous system. It is up to us, to parent our inner infant and calm our nervous system with AWARENESS< BREATHING< AND CONNECTION to source, self, and safety. With this morning ABC practice, ideally we start our day calm, present, and fully breathing. Unfortunately too many, in modern times, have been retrained with school ABCs: always be comparing, always be competing, or always be churning. Inspired by her mother who was a professional bellydancer, Mayte became the world’s youngest professional belly dancer at the tender age of 8. She was even featured on the popular show, “That’s Incredible.” While still in Germany, Mayte went to a Prince concert with her family. At the concert, her mother and father noticed that his song “Thieves in the Temple” had a very Arabic vibe to it. Mayte’s mother told her to send Prince a tape of her belly dancing to his song to show him her talents. Although she laughed off her mother’s suggestion, she eventually obliged. At another Prince concert just a week later, Mayte’s mother convinced some members of the New Power Generation (NPG) to give the video to Prince. Ten minutes later, Mayte was asked backstage by Prince, and for two years, they kept in touch. Finally, when Mayte turned 18, Prince asked her to be a part of the NPG. From 1992 to 1996, she was a featured dancer and background singer with Prince and the NPG. As such, she appeared in several music videos, as well as performing on tours, award shows, national and international television shows, and more. In 2017 as the world was mourning the loss of Prince, Mayte released her memoirs of that time in her life - “The Most Beautiful: My Life With Prince.” The heartfelt and touching autobiography soared to the top of several best seller lists and has been translated into several languages. Soon after the book was released, Mayte – noticing that many in the musical community were still grieving, decided to go back to her belly dancing roots to help people move through their pain. She developed a belly dancing class – the “Shimmy, Sweat and Smile with Mayte” experience. Your Healing Playground - Dr. Tina Koopersmith  Surfing between my 2 brains - juggling my inner critic and inner best friend. For years, living with myself vacillated between a daily celebration of life and a trip to a torture chamber disguised as a palace. All children are trying to survive in an unpredictable world where all the rules are not yet known.  I am unconditional love, joy and never-ending play--always have been, always will be. I love to move my body, to learn new things, to befriend strangers, human and furry, and celebrate breathing and aliveness. I have unbounded energy that I couldn't contain AND sugar and spice and everything nice living in a dress with lace and frills was NOT my version of fun. Give me a tshirt and shorts and let me play in the mud or climb the trees or race around the yard playing tag. Years before Title 9 was law, this way of being baffled my parents and my teachers and I felt I couldn't fully be me. I became an amazing chameleon, fitting in everywhere but never really feeling I belonged anywhere.  My inner judge disguised herself well. Whereas my inner best friend loved me so much, always wanting me to be better and better. The purpose of life was to improve yourself daily - trying to be the PERFECT version of me, but PERFECTION is impossible, and so it’s a staircase that leads nowhere but to disappointment. When you are raised to be a brain on a stick, you can’t escape into your body. Learning to reprogram my operating system, I can now befriend myself by spending time in my body rather than my logical brain. Like a chiropractic adjustment, this readjusted my nervous system.
