There’s been a lot of speculation about whether the next president and Congress will raise taxes.  But a Wall Street Journal editorial warns about another tax hike – the automatic increase that businesses will pay in unemployment taxes.  I think we all know that – one way or another – those increases will be passed along to us.  Doesn’t this highlight the importance of reducing our tax liabilities, wherever we can?

Anything could happen between now and November, but some political analysts predict that we’re going to see a “blue wave” on election day – with Democrats winning the White House, the Senate, and the House.  If that happens, Forbes says we’ll almost certainly see an increase in our federal tax rates.  But because of the rising deficit, we might be paying higher taxes no matter which party wins.  Is it too soon to try to be proactive about managing our taxes?

If you have a traditional 401(k), the contributions you make to it are tax deferred and tax deductible.  But Joe Biden wants to convert that deductibility to a 26% refundable tax credit.  That would benefit low-income workers, but it would penalize higher-income workers.  Investing strategist Matthew Sommer tells CNBC that such a change would make Roth retirement accounts more attractive. That’s great for young people – but what about those of us who already have 20- or 30-years’ worth of contributions in a traditional account?  Would we benefit from converting that money to a Roth?
