The gifts given to Jesus by the magi in the epic story of today’s gospel were full of contradictions. They included gold fit for a king as well as spices used for burial. In truth, all of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection contradicted most people’s expectations. The most radical of these contradictions was that the light of the world would come to be amongst us, in our own journey of life and death.
