Are you feeling burned out at work? While self care has never been more important, to address burnout we need to also understand how our work is structured.
The World Health Organization classifies burnout as a disease, and states symptoms include:
Feeling depleted energetically, or exhausted
Feeling mentally distanced from the job; negative or cynical about the job; not hopeful about where the work is going
Reduced professional efficacyAccording to Paula Dean at the Stress and Resilience Institute, these three things can contribute to burnout:
too many job demands, heavy workload, and/or lack of autonomy on how we do our work
too few job resources: not enough information, lack of autonomy, training, ir support from leadership or colleagues
not enough recovery from stress: vacations, mental time off from work, and yes, self-careIn this podcast episode, Paula Castillo and Jessica Carter suggest using the three areas above as a framework to help you get to the root of what's contributing to your feelings of burnout at work. Jess and Paula provide various work scenarios and examples. They also present how you can use your strengths when you can't change your workload or ask for more job resources.
