Your Next Objective podcast Round 24, addresses recognizing your weaknesses before your military or first responder transition forces you to confront them. If you’ve spent years in the military, law enforcement, fire service, or another first responder career, some of the traits that make you effective today can become liabilities when it’s time to transition.
Maybe you’re naturally assertive. You take control, make decisions quickly, and don’t wait around for someone else to solve the problem. That can be a strength in uniform. But in another environment, the same behavior might come across as overbearing, impatient, or unwilling to listen.
Maybe you’re the opposite. You’re comfortable staying in the background, letting someone else take the lead, and speaking only when you think it’s necessary. That might work well on your current team, but outside your profession, people may interpret it as a lack of confidence, initiative, or leadership.
The same thing can happen with how much you talk, how you handle emotion, how quickly you make decisions, how much control you need, and how willing you are to let other people influence the direction.
The goal isn’t to become the opposite of who you are. If you’re naturally assertive, you don’t need to become passive. If you’re quiet and thoughtful, you don’t need to suddenly become the loudest person in the room. You need to understand where your natural tendencies help you, where they hurt you, and how other people might perceive them.
That self-awareness matters when you’re preparing for civilian employment, interviewing for jobs, entering a new organization, building professional relationships, or learning how to lead people who don’t share your background.
Your personality isn’t necessarily the problem. The problem starts when you assume that because something worked throughout your career, it’ll work everywhere else. You’ve still got time before you transition. Use it to figure out what you do well, where you create friction, and how you can turn the parts of yourself that sometimes work against you into strengths you’ll carry into whatever comes next.
