    Summary:

This travel book humorously chronicles the trip Twain called his 'Great Pleasure Excursion,' on board the chartered vessel Quaker City through Europe and the Holy Land in 1867. The excursion was billed as a Holy Land expedition, with numerous stops and side trips along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, such as the train excursion from Marseille to Paris for the 1867 Paris Exhibition during the reign of Napoleon III and the Second French Empire, a journey through the Papal States to Rome, a side trip through the Black Sea to Odessa, and finally culminating in an excursion through the Holy Land. Twain recorded his observations and critiques of the various aspects of culture and society which he encountered on the journey, some more serious than others. Many of his observations draw a contrast between his own experiences and the often grandiose accounts in contemporary travelogues, which were regarded in their own time as indispensable aids for traveling in the region.

    Summary:

Olive (1850) is a novel by Dinah Maria Mulock Craik about a wife and painter who was born with physical disability. Excerpt from the book: 'Puir wee lassie, ye hae a waesome welcome to a waesome warld!' Such was the first greeting ever received by my heroine, Olive Rothesay. However, she would be then entitled neither a heroine nor even 'Olive Rothesay,' being a small nameless concretion of humanity, in color and consistency strongly resembling 'red earth,' whence was taken the father of all nations. No foreshadowing of the coming life brightened her purple, pinched-up, withered face, which, as in all new-born children, bore such a ridiculous likeness to extreme old age. No tone of the all-expressive human voice thrilled through the unconscious wail that was her first utterance, and in her wide-open meaningless eyes had never dawned the beautiful human soul. There she lay, as you and I, reader, with all our compeers, lay oncea helpless lump of breathing flesh.

The Poisoned Pen is a collection of 12 detective short stories by Arthur B. Reeve, featuring Craig Kennedy and Walter Jamesonthe American Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. Excerpt from the book: 'Kennedy's suit-case was lying open on the bed, and he was literally throwing things into it from his chiffonier, as I entered after a hurried trip up-town from the Star office in response to an urgent message from him. 'Come, Walter,' he cried, hastily stuffing in a package of clean laundry without taking off the wrapping-paper, 'I've got your suit-case out. Pack up whatever you can in five minutes. We must take the six o'clock train for Danbridge.' I did not wait to hear any more. The mere mention of the name of the quaint and quiet little Connecticut town was sufficient. For Danbridge was on everybody's lips at that time. It was the scene of the now famous Danbridge poisoning casea brutal case in which the pretty little actress, Vera Lytton, had been the victim.'

    Summary:

Fidelity (1915) is a novel by Susan Glaspell. Excerpt from the book: 'It was hard to get back into the easy current of everyday talk. Cora Albright's question had too rudely pulled them out of it, disturbing the quiet flow of inconsequential things. Even when they had recovered and were safely flowing along on the fact that the new hotel was to cost two hundred thousand dollars, after they had moved with apparent serenity to lamentation over a neighbor who was sick in bed and without a cook, it was as if they were making a display of the ease with which they could move on those commonplace things, as if thus to deny the consciousness of whirlpools near by. So they seemed to Dr. Deane Franklin, who, secured by the shadow of the porch vine, could smile to himself at the way he saw through them.'

The book also depicts his transformation from cynic to idealist. The three-part novel opens with the memorable line: 'He was born with a gift of laughter and a sense that the world was mad.' Summary:

Walden (1854) is a book by Henry David Thoreau. The text is a reflection upon simple living in natural surroundings. 'I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practice resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms, and, if it proved to be mean, why then to get the whole and genuine meanness of it, and publish its meanness to the world; or if it were sublime, to know it by experience, and be able to give a true account of it in my next excursion.'Henry David Thoreau
