Audrea shared her long but rewarding fertility journey.
Audrea Topps Harjo is a masterful storyteller, weaving narratives through the enchanting realms of words and dance from a tender age. Her artistic journey took root at the illustrious College of William & Mary, where she delved deep into the world of theater, specializing in stage direction. A spirited member of the esteemed dance company Orchesis, she lent her choreographic prowess to main stage productions like "Anything Goes" and "Hair." Audrea's dedication and talent earned her the prestigious Jefferson Cup for Theatre Excellence, a scholarship once bestowed upon the legendary Glenn Close.
Venturing beyond the stage, Audrea embarked on a brief but impactful stint in Ohio's summer stock theater and assistant director at Washington, D.C.'s renowned Arena Stage. She continued to nurture her creative spirit, ultimately earning a master's degree in film at Howard University. Her short film, "Raw Intensity," garnered the coveted Prized Pieces award for Best Student Work from the National Black Programming Consortium in 1991. It was a beacon of cinematic brilliance, screening at the Anjelika Film Center in New York City, the Black Filmmaker's Festival of Film and Video in San Francisco, and an array of other festivals during that season. Her thesis film, "Hard Candy," received a prestigious nomination for a Student Academy Award in 1993.
The siren call of Los Angeles beckoned Audrea, where she immersed herself in various aspects of the film industry, amassing invaluable experience behind the scenes. Sony Pictures Imageworks recognized her potential in 1995, and she took charge, supervising a digital crew and orchestrating postproduction for groundbreaking visual effects in movies like "Contact," "Starship Troopers," and "Godzilla." Her remarkable achievements paved the way for her to venture out and establish her own production company, Obsidian Pictures, Inc. In 2001, their production "Epoch of Lotus," starring luminaries Ho-Sung Pak and TJ Storm, graced the Cannes Film Market and claimed the Best Filmmaking Award for "Best Thirty Minute Film" at the 1st Damah Film Festival in Seattle, Washington.
In 2002, Audrea embraced a new role as a digital production manager and producer on high-profile projects, including "X-Men 2," "Garfield," and "Sky Captain, World of Tomorrow." Her career trajectory then led her to Electronic Arts, where she served as a development director for console and mobile games. Her expertise earned her an invitation to New Zealand in 2011, where she joined forces with Peter Jackson's WETA FX, taking on the role of production manager for the creature’s department on cinematic blockbusters like "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," "The Adventures of Tintin," "The Hobbit," "The Avengers," and "Man of Steel."
Audrea's journey circled back to Los Angeles in 2013, marking a triumphant return to the creative realm. She found herself as a virtual production liaison between WETA Digital and James Cameron's Lightstorm Entertainment for the "Avatar" sequels. In 2014, Audrea wore the hat of a writer, director, and producer, bringing to life the mesmerizing short film, "Phases." Her creative fervor only grew, culminating in the production of three feature-length independent films: "Secrets," "All In," which triumphed with the Best Narrative accolade at the American Black Film Festival in 2019, and "The Available Wife," a streaming sensation that premiered on December 15, 2020, via UMC.
