A. Understanding darkness.
1. Everyone is born in darkness.
Ephesians 5:8 for at one time you were darkness…
2. Our adversary the devil wants to keep us in darkness.
2 Corinthians 4:4 … the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
3. People don't realize they are in darkness.
Revelation 3:17 For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked.
4. People naturally love the darkness.
John 3:19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.
5. Darkness does not like to be exposed to light.
John 3:20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed.
B. Understanding light.
1. The promise of the light.
Isaiah 9:2 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone.
2. The light arrives.
John 1:1-14 and John 8:12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
3. God's Word is a powerful tool of light.
Psalm 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
4. The light has come to rescue us out of darkness.
John 12:46 I have come into the world as light, so that whoever
believes in me may not remain in darkness.
Colossians 1:13 and 20
5. As Jesus rescues us, we become lights in the darkness.
Matthew 5:14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
