NZ expresses concern over Nepal-Tibet disaster; five Kiwis reported missing

New Zealand has joined other nations in expressing deep concern and condolences following the catastrophic flash flooding and landslide along the Nepal-Tibet border. Five New Zealanders are among those reported missing after the disaster. Speaking to Radio Tarana host Sanjesh Narain during her weekly interview, ACT MP Dr Parmjeet Parmar said New Zealand officials were maintaining direct contact with authorities in Nepal regarding the situation. Dr Parmar also discussed the Government’s proposed social media restrictions for under-16s. She said ACT would support the Social Media ( Online Safety (Minimum Age and Child Safety Risk Assessment) Bill and suggested the Government should wait to see what changes Meta introduces in response to the proposed restrictions. The legislation currently seeks to require social media platforms to take reasonable steps to prevent under-16s from holding accounts. 

Labour’s Carmel Sepuloni says supporters want change, rules out working with NZ First

Labour Party deputy leader Carmel Sepuloni says the party is getting “good vibes” from its supporters and undecided voters, with many telling Labour they want the current Government out. Speaking to Radio Tarana host Sanjesh Narain, Sepuloni said Labour was hearing growing support from voters who were looking for a change in Government. She also reiterated that Labour would not work with NZ First after the next election, citing what she described as repeated racial remarks by the party’s leader and members. Sepuloni said Labour had made its position clear and did not see NZ First as a potential coalition partner. The Labour deputy leader also expressed sadness over reports that party leader Chris Hipkins had been threatened by a member of the public. Sepuloni said she had personally experienced racial abuse, particularly through her social media platforms. She said such comments were distressing, but she remained focused on representing her communities and campaigning for Labour. Sepuloni’s comments come as political parties step up their campaigning and seek to win over undecided voters ahead of the election.

Willow-Jean Prime says people are becoming increasingly frustrated with the current Government, which is why they are becoming more vocal about their concerns.

Speaking to Radio Tarana host Sanjesh Narain, the Labour MP said people were not hearing enough from the Government about how its policies would improve their everyday lives.

Prime also said Māori are facing some of the same types of comments and treatment from Government ministers that migrants have been experiencing.

ACT MP Dr Parmjeet Parmar is calling for all applications in the Parent Resident Visa category to be placed into a queue rather than relying on the current ballot system. Speaking to Radio Tarana host Sanjesh Narain, Dr Parmar said she believes the existing ballot system is not transparent and that families need a fairer, more predictable process. 

Labour’s immigration spokesperson, Phil Twyford, says it is disappointing to see the Government fighting among itself while people are struggling. He says the country needs a stable government.

He joined Radio Tarana host Sanjesh Narain to discuss Labour’s chances of winning the election in light of the latest leadership struggle within the governing party.

On immigration policy, Twyford says Labour supports the latest changes to the Parent Category visa, but believes the Parent Boost Visitor visa remains out of reach for many migrants who struggle to meet the medical insurance and income threshold requirements. He says Labour will announce a more migrant-friendly immigration policy soon.

Labour MP Priyanca Radhakrishnan says she is told to “go back to your country” on social media almost every day.

Speaking to Radio Tarana host Sanjesh Narain, Radhakrishnan said Prime Minister Christopher Luxon needs to take bold action against New Zealand First leader Winston Peters, accusing him of continuing to make racist remarks.

Radhakrishnan said the repeated online abuse reflects a broader issue of racism and called on the Prime Minister to show stronger leadership in addressing divisive political rhetoric.

Labour campaign chair Kieran McAnulty says it is highly unlikely that the Labour Party would work with NZ First after the election. Speaking to Radio Tarana host Sanjesh Narain, McAnulty said the current NZ First Party is “very different” from the one Labour worked with during the last Labour-led government.

ACT MP Dr Parmjeet Parmar says New Zealanders travelling to India should exercise caution and ensure they register with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s SafeTravel service before departing.

Speaking to Radio Tarana host Sanjesh Narain, Dr Parmar also said she has written to the Immigration Minister to raise community concerns about the Parent Category Resident Visa
