Conversational memory

Active listening is important! (looking at them with your eyes and body language, etc.) Conversational memory is about remembering what someone has said the last conversation you had with them. When you follow up on a conversation you had with a student in a previous week it shows that students that you value them.

Apps you can use to keep track of conversations with students. Evernote. Notes app on your phone.

Transparency with students. Be transparent, just don’t dive deep into the details. When you share your own journey it helps students to feel comfortable to share their story. Be careful with how many details you give. Keep the focus on Jesus…the redemption part of the story. That needs to be the hero of the story, not your struggle.

Small-Group Prep

Part of a successful group is presence and a huge piece of presence is being “all there” when it comes to small group time. We need to lead with expectancy.

Here are some tips:

• Pray for yourself and your own walk with God

Self-Feeding

Sometimes Small Group Leaders can be so busy serving they forget to do the things necessary to avoid burn out.  Today we are talking about habits that are necessary for proper self-feeding when it comes to our own walk with God because you can’t give to others what you don’t have to give.

• Daily time with God

Relate - asking them how they are doing and what is going on in their life. Finding out about their week. Following up on conversations you had with them the previous week. Click the link for some great ice breaker questions to ask.

Affirm - find ways to affirm students any way you can! An affirmation can literally change someone's life!

Pray - this may be the most awkward one for many leaders. It shouldn’t be, but to actually stop and pray for someone is so vital. When you pray for someone, it makes a significant impact!
