  • Intro to “Sanskrit for Yoga” at Blue Point Yoga (7/17/19)
    I am pleased to present an audio recording of the presentation on “Intro to Sanskrit for Yoga” that I made on Wednesday, July 17, 2019 to the students undergoing yoga teacher training at the Blue Point Yoga Center in Durham under the guidance of Sara Doyle.
    Brief summary of what we covered:
    General characteristics of the Sanskrit language
    Sanskrit alphabet – 48 letters; vowels are written first, then consonants
    Sanskrit sounds are produced by placing the tongue in various positions in the mouth
    Sanskrit transliteration – diacritical marks with examples
    Pronunciation of some of the common yoga terms – asana names, pranayama, meditation, yoga sutras, common words, numerals

  • Sutras 2.19 thru 2.23 (YSP workshop Saturday, 6/15/19)
    I am pleased to present an audio recording of the monthly workshop on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali held on Saturday, 06/15/19:
    Brief summary of what we covered:
    We continued the discussion of chapter 2. This chapter covers the concepts of Kriya Yoga, kleshas (afflictions), karma theory, insight into the Samkhya philosophy and the eight limbs of yoga. We covered the following sutras:
    Sutra 2.19 (four stages of gunas)
    Sutra 2.20 (purusha, even though pure, follows mind)
    Sutra 2.21 (prakriti for the sake of purusha)
    Sutra 2.22 (after liberation prakriti exists for other non-liberated souls)
    Sutra 2.23 (purpose of union between purusha and prakriti)
