"Because then, it will be 1986. Marcos will have declared snap elections to try to prove to his American allies that he is still loved by the people. He is not. He knows it. But he has the money and the allies he needs to fraud his way to victory, just as he has done in the past two referendums. It is the cold, sociopathic mindset that has kept him dictator for over two decades now. And it is the mindset that will mean the lives of those who oppose his allies."

"Marcos and his weapon, Martial Law, settle in for the long haul. He can’t even remember being afraid he’d be deposed as President. Now he and Imelda will be here forever. And when he dies? Whatever, his son or daughter will run for President and they’ll use the same strategies to make sure it stays in the family. They truly are kings and queens now."

'Ten years later, when he recounts the story to international news media ... he will say “it seems just like yesterday …. Days before, word was going around that Mangudadatu’s rivals were threatening to chop him to pieces. We were expecting maybe a gunfight.” But when that second text came through, Espina recounts “I felt my knees go weak”. It reads: “Convoy Found. All dead.'

Phones everywhere began to ring incessantly with that sound bite as the most popular ringtone to have “Hello Garci? Hello Garci? Hello Garci?” ... there is not a doubt in anyone’s mind that it was GMA in the call. That voice is as distinct as anything else about her ... Her denial is only making things worse, making people angrier or just making her look dumber and shameless in general. GMA knows this as well as anyone. She’s corrupt and a cheater, but she’s not stupid. There’s only so much that flagrant obfuscating can cover up.

"Finally, after months of mudslinging and the real issues facing the Filipino people taking a backseat to finger pointing and name calling, it is the election. People from all across the archipelago flock to the polls to decide who the next President of the Philippines is going to be. The pre-election polls are in, and it’s only going to be one of two people: Ramos or Santiago. Grab the popcorn, because it’s going to be one hell of a show.?"

"He stands up and he yells, how dare he. To the face of the Founder of the Katipunan? Is he serious? This convention would not have happened if he didn’t call for it, if he and men like him – the laborers with calloused hands and sun-beaten brows – weren’t brave enough to take a stand in the first place. Who is Tirona and his ilk, sitting across him with his finely trimmed hair and expensive suit? Who is Aguinaldo, perched now to take his seat on the table with his hands, trained by the best with a sword and a horse’s reins when Bonifacio had to learn it from nothing?"

It's 2022, and the next Presidential elections are fast approaching. But before we look at the future, let us first look at the past.
Our theme for this season is the "Battle for the Ballot". Join us as we take you through six different election scandals through the Philippines's young history, that have exemplified our voting culture built on mudslinging, class warfare, and even outright death.
Get mad about Filipino History. This is YUGTO.
"It is 2008. The Philippine Weightlifting Association picks a wild card entry to the summer Olympics. It’s a young lady who has been on the scene for a little while now, and is known for her consistent ethic and passion for the sport. In doing so, the Association actually sets the path for the Philippines to win its first Olympic gold. While they do not know that at the time, what they do is still unprecedented – in their selection of a young Hidilyn Diaz, not only do they send only the sixth weightlifter in Filipino history to the Olympics, they also send the first female weightlifter."

"Today, we remember and reflect on the athletes in Filipino history who died before they could truly realize what they were capable of. And who better to have as our focus than the Filipino boxer sharing the name of a famous Mexican revolutionary? Before Manny Pacquiao, before Onyok Velasco, Leopoldo Serantes and Anthony Villanueva, there was Pancho Villa. Pancho Villa lives on in the annals of World Boxing, considered to be of one of most formative and iconic Asian Boxers in World History, some even calling him the greatest Asian Fighter ever. This is his glory. And this is his tragedy."

"Sulaiman is at the end of her rope. Her mental health frays at the edges. Suddenly the excited crowds were whispering behind her back. Suddenly, missives from once adoring fans were replaced by invasive questions about what’s between her legs and threats of violence. Suddenly, the media, locally and abroad, that had called her the Fastest Woman in Asia, were now calling her a potential fraud and crossdresser." We revisit one of our subjects from our pilot season -- Mona Sulaiman, once the Asia's sprint queen.
