Muazh’s رضي الله عنه two wives passed away from the plague. Muazh رضي الله عنه drew lots to decide which to lower into the grave first - showcasing his utmost Taqwa. The blessed wives were buried in the same grave.

The passing of Abu Ubaydah رضي الله عنه: He and his family initially weren’t affected. He made dua that his family be given a share.

Abu Ubaydah رضي الله عنه, now dying, gave his final advice.

Muazh, Amr Ibn al-Aas and Dahaak Ibn Qays رضي الله عنهم lowered Abu Ubaydah رضي الله عنه into his grave. Muazh رضي الله عنه began to praised him…

(S53)

When the Plague of Amwaas struck, Muazh رضي الله عنه made dua that his family be given a fair share: they all were martyred by it.

His 2 blessed daughters were martyred first. His son, Abdul Rahman Ibn Muazh رضي الله عنهم also caught it. He رضي الله عنه was most beloved to Muazh.

When Muazh رضي الله عنه caught it, a man started weeping. Muazh رضي الله عنه asked why. The man said: “I used to get my knowledge from you, now what will I do when you leave?!”. Muazh رضي الله عنه comforted him, saying: “Do not weep. Ibraaheem (a.s) recieved knowledge from Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى even when knowledge wasn’t available. After me, seek knowledge from 4; Abdullah Ibn Masood, Abdullah Ibn Salaam, Salman al-Farsi and Abu Darda رضي الله عنهم”.

It can be said that the plague of Amwaas was a recalling of the Companions رضي الله عنهم back to their Lord, سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى. Their duty of establishing the Religion was complete. It only took them 7 years after the passing of The Messenger ﷺ that they spread Islam around the globe. Now, Islam was never to fall. May Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى reward these blessed souls handsomely for their service to the Deen. They did more in 7 years than we have done in thousands…

Muazh, Abu Ubaydah, Shurahbeel and Abu Malik al-Ashari رضي الله عنهم all were struck by the plague on the same day.

The Plague of Amwaas, 18 A.H: around 30,000 Muslims were martyred by this plague, including many Companions رضي الله عنهم. It occurred around half way through Umar’s رضي الله عنه Khilafat.

The Messenger ﷺ tells Muazh رضي الله عنه about the plague and that he will migrate to Shaam…

When Muazh رضي الله عنه was affected by the plague, he said it was more beloved to him than being given red camels. He made dua his entire family be given a share of the plague - they all were martyred by it.

Plagues used to be a punishment, but for this Ummah it is a mercy. It grants one martyrdom, however you must be patient, not flee, expect reward and know it is the degree of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى.

Muazh رضي الله عنه: “The plague is martyrdom. It is a mercy. It is a dua of The Messenger ﷺ”.

Umar رضي الله عنه asked some men around him: “What are your wishes?”. One man replied: “That this room be full of silver and I spend it in the path of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى”. Umar رضي الله عنه wasn’t impressed. Another said: “that it be filled with gold” and another: “that it be filled with rubies and I spend it in the Path of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى”. Umar رضي الله عنه still wasn’t impressed. The men wondered what the right answer was. Umar رضي الله عنه said: “I wish this room was full of men like Abu Ubaydah, Muazh Ibn Jabal and Hudayfah Ibn al-Yaman [رضي الله عنهم], so I could employ them to serve the Deen”.

Wealth is the standard for the people of the world, the standard for the God-fearing is Taqwa.

Umar رضي الله عنه heard of the plague outbreak in Shaam. He رضي الله عنه said: “If I am martyred by the plague, my successor is Abu Ubaydah رضي الله عنه. If Abu Ubaydah رضي الله عنه passes before me, then my successor is Muazh Ibn Jabal رضي الله عنه”. Such was the love and trust that Umar had for these 2 noble souls [رضي الله عنهم].

Muazh رضي الله عنه, now in Shaam (Palestine/Jordan) was teaching the masses. He رضي الله عنه would sometimes perform 5 Takbeers in the Janazah Salah, the usual being 4. This was to honour the deceased, depending on who it was.

Imam Ali رضي الله عنه performed 6 Takbeers for his paired brother, Sahl Ibn Hunayf رضي الله عنه and said it was due to him being a Badri. Ali رضي الله عنه would do 5 Takbeers for the Companions (رضي الله عنهم) and 4 for the Muslims. The Messenger ﷺ himself did 9 Takbeers for his beloved uncle, Hamza رضي الله عنه - The Lion of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى).

Umar رضي الله عنه loved the advice and words of Abu Ubaydah and Muazh رضي الله عنهم. Umar رضي الله عنه told them (رضي الله عنهم) to never stop writing to him.

The one who consults never regrets. Only a buffoon would not consult with the people…

During these clashes, Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه passed away and Umar رضي الله عنه succeeded him. Umar رضي الله عنه called back Muazh رضي الله عنه.

Muazh رضي الله عنه: “Salvation lies in 3 things; Purity in deeds. Salah, for it represents the entire Religion. Obedience, in which lies protection”.

The Messenger ﷺ said to Muazh رضي الله عنه: “Obey the leader. Offer Salah behind any Imam. Never curse any of my Companions [رضي الله عنهم]”.

The people were coming to Islam in flocks in Shaam - Yazeed Ibn Abu Sufyan رضي الله عنهم writes to Umar رضي الله عنه to send some teachers. Muazh, Ubadah Ibn as-Saamit and Abu Darda رضي الله عنهم went…

Muazh رضي الله عنه was involved in the campaigns during Abu Bakr’s رضي الله عنه Khilafat. The cousin of Muazh رضي الله عنه, Asma bint Yazeed Ibn Sakan رضي الله عنها killed 9 Romans with a tent pole in the Battle of Yarmook.

During the Battle of Pella, the Romans suggested a messenger to be sent to them. Abu Ubaydah رضي الله عنه sent Muazh رضي الله عنه. Muazh رضي الله عنه use the Qur’an to answer the Romans questions…

During the reign of the 2 Shaykhs رضي الله عنهم: Whenever Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه needed men of knowledge for a meeting, he’d gather Umar, Uthmaan, Ali, Abdul Rahman Ibn Awf, Muazh Ibn Jabal, Ubayy Ibn Ka’ab & Zayd Ibn Thaabit رضي الله عنهم. (Muazh رضي الله عنه even gave fatwa during the lifetime of The Messenger ﷺ).

Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه dismisses Khalid Ibn Sa’eed رضي الله عنه and puts in his place Shurahbeel Ibn Hasana رضي الله عنه. Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه informs Shurahbeel رضي الله عنه to consult with 3 excellent men who will yield excellent results; Abu Ubaydah, Muazh Ibn Jabal and Khalid Ibn Sa’eed رضي الله عنهم.

Muazh رضي الله عنه seeks permission to participate in Jihad in Shaam. Umar رضي الله عنه doesn’t want Muazh رضي الله عنه to go for Jihad, as he was such an ocean of knowledge that the people needed him…
