מעלת חודש אלול נתבאר ע"י אדה"ז "עפ"י משל למלך שקודם בואו לעיר יוצאין אנשי העיר לקראתו ומקבלין פניו בשדה, ואז רשאין כל מי שרוצה להקביל פניו והוא מקבל את כולם בסבר פנים יפות ומראה פנים שוחקות לכולם, ובלכתו העירה הרי הם הולכים אחריו וכו'". משל זה מובן גם לילדים, שכן כשיאמרו לכם שמלך המדינה נמצא בשדה וניתן להגיש אליו בקשות והוא ישמח למלאותם וכו', בודאי שכ"א מכם יעזוב כל עניניו וירוץ למלך! אומרת "תורת אמת" שכ"ה המציאות בהנהגת ה' בחודש אלול! ואע"פ שלא רואים א"ז בעיני בשר, הרי אדרבה‏ – ‏מכיון שהסיבה שלא רואים א"ז היא גדלות המלך, הרי זה, שמ"מ מקבלו בסבר פנים יפות, מעורר אצלו עוד יותר האהבה אליו, ומקבל ע"ע החלטות טובות להתנהג כרצונו וכו'.

The special quality of the month of Elul is expressed by the Alter Rebbe with the parable of a king who goes out to the field where anyone can greet him, and he receives them all with a pleasant countenance etc., after which the people follow him to the city etc. This parable can be understood by children: certainly, when they are told that the king of the country is in the field and that they can go to him and ask for whatever they need, and that he will happily fulfill it etc. – they will put everything aside and run to the king. The Torah of Truth tells us that this is what Hashem does in the month of Elul. And although we don’t see it with our physical eyes – that is only because of how lofty the King is – a fact which awakens their love for the King even more, and motivates them to resolve to behave as Hashem wants etc.
