And the fact that the teachings of Chabad Chassidus draw down the innermost secrets to the lowest levels indicates that they come from an even higher source (even higher than the level of the secrets of the secrets). The lesson is to increase even more in revealing and disseminating the inner dimension of the Torah, especially as they are explained in the teachings of Chabad Chassidus.

The verse states in sheini of parashas Devarim (following Moshe Rabbeinu’s words “How can I bear alone...,” in response to which Hashem instructed Moshe to appoint “officers of thousands, officers of hundreds, etc.”): “You shall judge justly between a man and his fellow, and between his litigant. You must not favor anyone in judgment…Bring to me any case that is too difficult for you and I will hear it.” The lesson is that when a Jew finds himself in a situation where he needs to judge himself and determine how to act, the Torah commands that he judge himself not based on his own desires, but with a just judgement according to Torah. And if the matter is difficult and he cannot decide on his own, he should not rely on himself but rather ask his rosh-yeshiva and the like, and follow their guidance.

While Torah and mitzvos in general “provide refuge,” as it says (in shishi of parashas Masei), “…they will serve as cities of refuge for you,” nevertheless, this applies primarily to Torah – “Words of Torah provide refuge,” and they “protect and save even when one is not engaged in them.” Similarly, in mitzvos, there are some mitzvos where the quality “protecting and saving” is expressed to a greater extent than others: The Mezuzah seals the home and prevents any stranger from entering, and certainly preventing the yetzer-hara, the “blood avenger” from entering. Tefillin causes “all the peoples of the earth to see that the name of Hashem is called upon you, and they will fear you.” Tzedakah – as it says in Midrash Tanchuma etc. And even more so in the Mivtza of Bayis Malei Sefarim, where the entire essence of the home is only a vessel for the sefarim within it. Therefore, this is the appropriate place to once again bring up the importance of engaging in the these five Mivtzoim etc.

Regarding the borders of Eretz Yisroel (as discussed in shelishi of parashas Masei), Rashi in many places interprets the word gevul to mean meitzar (“limit”), such as in Bamidbar 34:2, where Rashi writes, “Since many mitzvos apply inside the Land and not outside the Land, it was necessary to write the boundaries (מצרני) of its surrounding borders on all sides etc.” Seemingly, we already find the term gevul in earlier verses, and Rashi offers no explanation. Similarly, parashas Yisro states, “Vehigbalta” (commanding the Jewish people to make a boundary around the mountain), yet Rashi doesn’t see a need there to explain that it means “a boundary”? The explanation is as follows: In general, the primary meaning of gevul is not only the boundary, but the entire area contained within the boundary. Therefore, in the places in Devarim where you can’t say that gevul refers to the whole area, Rashi explains that it refers only to the boundary itself. For example, on the verse, u’gevul yam (“and the sea boundary”), Rashi explains, “the western boundary,” because since the sea itself isn’t part of Eretz Yisroel, you can’t say that it refers to the entire area. Among the wondrous things contained in this Rashi: Rashi states that the mitzvos are tied to “the boundaries of its surrounding borders on all sides”: being that everything in the physical world descends from the spiritual realm, the question arises: if Hashem is unlimited, where do the limitations and boundaries in the world come from? The answer is that they come from the limits and boundaries of the mitzvos, as the Torah commands, “You shall not add nor diminish,” the fact that there are only four passages in the tefillin etc.

The name Matos signifies strength and firmness, while Masei signifies journeying and advancing from level to level, to the point that the previous level is considered like “Egypt.” This is why the verse says, “These are the journeys (in the plural) of the Jewish people who left the land of Egypt” – because as long as they hadn’t yet reached Eretz Yisroel, they could not rest or remain in place, to the extent that they felt they still needed to leave “the land of Egypt.” The lesson is that alongside standing firmly in matters of Torah and mitzvos, one must also increase in his divine service, rising from level to level until meriting the true and complete Redemption, at which time all the elevations will be within holiness itself, including through the service associated with the left side, the attribute of Gevurah, which brings the utmost intensity to the elevation within holiness. During the time of exile, this is the service of teshuvah, the service of the left side, which is also expressed in the fact that all one’s efforts are in a manner of “a double portion of wisdom,” which prepares for the Redemption. This is the connection to the name of the month, Menachem-Av, where the beginning and main focus is on the word “Menachem” (despite the fact that this part of the name was added later) whose numerical value “Tzemach,” which refers to Moshiach. And by making firm positive resolutions in these matters, we will merit that “they are immediately redeemed,” and the “journey” will begin “with heavenly clouds” toward the western side of the Jordan.

The Mishna states, “Exile yourself to a place of Torah”: During the summer, thousands of Jews travel “from your land and from your birthplace and from your father’s house” – from their homes where they are settled and have all the comforts, they exile themselves to the “country,” where they lack all those comforts, and yet they call it relaxing…Here we see the power of will: by convincing themselves to enjoy it, they transform a matter of exile and discomfort into something enjoyable. However, since being in the country is not the same as being at home, it still constitutes “exiling yourself,” and therefore they must ensure that it is to a “place of Torah.” And all the more so in the summer camps: just as the staff must take care of the children’s physical health (and children’s health is even more important that of adults), they must also make sure that the summer camp is a “place of Torah,” and it begins by showing the children a living example.

Nevertheless, this must not chas v’shalom diminish one’s trust in Hashem, Who is the “Guardian of the Jewish people Who neither slumbers nor sleeps, including for those in the Holy Land, which Hashem gave to every Jew, each of whom will receive their portion of the Land with the coming of Moshiach. This will be hastened by studying Torah and doing mitzvos with tremendous trust in Hashem, and then the Jewish people will witness the consolation of Tzion and Yerushalayim immediately.

The verse states in sheini of parashas Matos, “Arm from among you men…to wreak Hashem’s vengeance on Midian...”; the Alter Rebbe explains that “Midian” comes from the word riv u’madon (strife and discord), the opposite of unity, chas v’shalom, among the Jewish people. This kelipah is the “source of the existence of evil” – the beginning of the possibility for a deficiency, chas v’shalom, in Torah and mitzvos. This is the meaning of the command to “Arm from among you…”: every Jew must do everything in their power to nullify “Midian” and to bring about Ahavas Yisroel and Achdus Yisroel. And this is “Hashem’s vengeance” – it concerns Hashem Himself. Another aspect here is that in the war against Midian, “not one man was missing from us,” they all returned intact from the war; similarly, when a Jew wages the spiritual war against Midian, he is guaranteed to return with his body, soul, and property intact. And by increasing in Ahvas Yisroel, we hasten the coming of the Redemption.
