(1) Rosh Chodesh is a special Yom Tov for women, on which women customarily refrain from certain forms of work, in reward for their refusal to take part in the avodah-zarah (“foreign service”) of the golden calf etc. The lesson is that during the exile, women have the power to strengthen the men to have no association with anything foreign to the Jewish people. (2) The liberation of my father-in-law the Rebbe from prison on 12 Tammuz effected a strengthening in the spreading of Yiddishkeit in that country. The truth is that the Rebbe was informed of his release on Rosh Chodesh Tammuz, but he refused to leave because the trip (to exile in Kostroma) would continue into Shabbos; instead he chose to remain in prison until after Shabbos. The lesson is that when the yetzer hara tries to convince a person that it’s permissible to transgress Hashem’s command in order to be released from “prison” – one must not listen, and must trust in Hashem Who will surely guide him on the good path etc.

A lesson from chamishi of Parashas Korach, “Speak to the Jewish people and take from them a staff…from each of their princes…and place them in the Tent of Meeting…and behold, Aharon’s staff for the House of Levi had blossomed…and produced ripe almonds” (the fastest ripening fruit, as Rashi explains): Hashem gives every Jew from every tribe a “staff” to lean upon – a special empowerment to serve his Creator. And there’s a special lesson from the staff of the tribe of Levi, Aharon’s staff, which “gave forth blossoms” etc.: We are empowered to cause anything in the world, even something inanimate (a “staff”) to “blossom,” to turn it into something beautiful – connected with Yiddishkeit etc. – and to do it quickly (like almonds). And although this only happened to the staff of Aharon, nevertheless, Aharon is the Kohen Gadol of all Jews, and therefore this lesson from Aharon’s staff applies to every Jew.

The core and inner dimension of Torah is that it is Hashem’s wisdom and will, “I was...His delight,” and one must study Torah for that purpose. In contrast, when one studies Torah with ulterior motives and his own existence in mind, such as studying “in order to be called ‘Rabbi’” or as a “spade to dig with” – that is the external dimension of Torah. Everyone must designate time each day to study Torah for its own sake, without any external purpose, and those who are able to, should dedicate an extended period of several weeks, months, or years for this purpose. There are those who, despite having a full beard (which represents the Thirteen Attributes of Mercy, corresponding to the thirteen words in the verse “And He, being compassionate, pardons iniquity...”), nonetheless find it difficult to withstand this test...(I don’t know whether these words will have an effect on them from now on, but I have to say what I have to say); those who cannot always do it themselves should contribute to support those who study Torah in the abovementioned manner – “those who support it are fortunate.”

Two teachings are cited as a source for the idea that “A wise man” (a Jew) must be recognizable even “in his actions, in his eating and drinking”: (1) “All your deeds should be for the sake of Heaven,” which means that one eats and drinks etc. with the intention that afterwards he will be able to learn better etc., but the deed itself is not part of his service of Hashem. (2) “Know Him in all your ways,” which refers to a loftier form of service where one “knows Him” within “all your ways” themselves, meaning one connects to Hashem while eating and drinking by elevating the sparks of holiness in the food and drink etc., and similarly one does business not merely to be able to give tzedakah later, but rather he senses G-dliness within his business itself. This service is attainable for every Jew, but one must go “from the easier to the more difficult”; beginning one’s day with, “I have set Hashem before me always,” gives a person the strength to “have set Hashem before me always,” not just during Torah study and davening, but “in all your ways.”

Although Korach understood that there are distinctions between Jews (and he himself wished to be appointed in place of Elitzafan ben Uziel), nevertheless, he argued (in rishon of parashas Korach), “Why do you raise yourselves above the assembly of Hashem?” meaning, why must your being “raised above” be expressed in the areas where the Kohen is equal to other Jews? But the truth is that the Kohen’s special quality changes every part of him. Similarly, while man is created in the Divine image and possesses a quality superior to other beings, for a Jew, this quality is even loftier than it is among the nations of the world. We find a similar concept regarding the korban tamid: although the tamid is a daily offering, when it is offered on Shabbos and Yom Tov etc., the holiness of the day imbues it with even greater sanctity. The lesson is that the special quality of a Jew must be expressed not only when he engages in Torah and mitzvos, but even when he engages in mundane matters, as the Rambam writes, “The wise man is recognizable in his actions, in his eating and drinking.” Similarly, among the Jewish people itself, when someone has is on a loftier spiritual level than others, this quality must be expressed even in his mundane affairs, and his Torah and mitzvos must also shine more than that of someone not on his level.

The hint in the mitzvah of Challah (as described in shishi of parashas Shelach): Flour is made by taking whole kernels of grain and grinding them into fine particles, then mixing them with water and kneading them into dough. Similarly, in one’s Divine service one must first “grind” his own personal identity – his body and animal soul with all its desires – into fine particles, meaning they take up no space in his own eyes, “and my soul will be like dust” etc. However, this isn’t yet sufficient to make “bread that sustains man’s heart.” Rather, one must bind all the pieces into one by mixing them with “water,” whose nature is to flow “from a high place and to a low place” – not thinking about oneself and his own personal advancement, but looking for a “low place” where there is something he can accomplish by impacting someone else. And when this dough is baked with the warmth of “one oven” – the warmth of Hashem Who is One – then it becomes “bread that sustains man’s heart” etc.

(In response to a claim by some of the religious parties that by fighting for conversion according to halacha, the Rebbe was causing Jews not to go to Eretz Yisroel, like the spies chas v’shalom): The proof from the story of the spies is the opposite: it was the spies who said, “We seemed like grasshoppers”; they saw themselves as “grasshoppers” compared to the gentiles, the “men of great size”; therefore they claimed that one must act like a grasshopper in relation to a non-Jew, and argued that that “We cannot go up.” Similarly: Why don’t you have the courage to stand up and say that today you recited Shema Yisroel, and that it’s forbidden to bow to avodah zarah, and that you will not sign something that goes against halacha, namely, giving a non-Jew a paper saying he is Jewish, which will lead to a Jew (any Jew, even if he is far from Yiddishkeit, is still a Jew) to stumble and marry a non-Jew?! This was the sin of the spies, which was caused “weeping for generations” until this very generation Rachmana litzlan. Rather, the solution is, “Do not fear…they are our bread” because “Hashem is with us.”

אף אם בנוגע לשקו"ט יש לעיין האם יהושע וכלב נשארו שלוחים של משה רבינו גם לאחרי ששאר המרגלים לא מילאו את השליחות, וזה תלוי האם זו היתה שליחות אחת או שהוא שלח אותם כי"ב שלוחים וכו', אבל בנוגע לפועל צ"ל שיהושע וכלב נשארו שלוחיו של משה, וכמפורש בפסוק [ברביעי דפ' שלח ש"יהושע בן נון וכלב בן יפונה חיו מן האנשים ההם". ועוד – ע"פ פרש"י ש"נטלו חלקם של המרגלים" משמע שהם השלימו גם את חלק השליחות של שאר המרגלים, כי ע"י שיהושע וכלב גרמו לבנ"י להתחרט עד שהיו מוכנים לעלות לא"י מיד וכו' התמלאה השליחות וכו'. וההוראה: יש להשתדל "אפי' מאה פעמים" לקרב יהודי שלא מתנהג כדבעי, ואפי' אם לא רואים מיד התוצאות ואפי' אם אחרים שהתעסקו אתו בזה בהתחלה כבר התייאשו בגלל זה ועזבו אותו – אין להתפעל אלא עליו להמשיך לקרבו וכו'.

There’s a discussion as to whether Yehoshua and Kaleiv remained shluchim of Moshe Rabbeinu even after the other spies failed to fulfill the shilchus (depending on whether Moshe sent the spies on one mission or twelve separate missions etc.). At any rate, in practice we must conclude that Yehoshua and Kalev did remain Moshe’s shluchim, as the verse states (in revi’i of parashas Shelach) “Of those men, Yehoshua and Kalev remained alive….” Moreover, as Rashi states, Yehoshua and Kalev were given the portion of the other spies in Eretz Yisroel, implying that they completed the other spies’ portion of the mission as well. This is because by bringing the Jewish people to regret their actions, the mission was completed etc. The lesson is that one must persist in drawing a Jew near “even a hundred times”; even if one doesn’t immediately see results, and even if others who initially tried have already given up – one must not be discouraged, but must continue to draw him near etc.

The beginning of shelishi of parashas Shelach, “If Hashem desires us, He will bring us to this land…” is a direct continuation of the end of sheini, “The land is very, very good.” This is evident from the plain reading of the verses, as well as from the explanation in Likkutei Torah (where both verses form a single dibur hamaschil). As explained there, the connection between the two verses is that it is specifically “If Hashem desires us,” the inner desire (the inner dimension of Kesser) which totally transcends limitation (the level of “very, very”) that is revealed in the land. Thus, whereas the spies wanted to remain in the desert and to fulfill mitzvos in a spiritual sense (in the realm of thought or the realm of speech etc.), Yehoshua and Kalev proclaimed, “The land is very, very good” – the main goal is to fulfill the mitzvos practically, and this requires actually entering the land. Similarly, nowadays it is not enough to “enter the land” in a spiritual sense; the main thing is the coming of the true and complete Redemption, and the “land flowing with milk and honey” literally.

[המשך] וההוראה: לפעמים מחליטים בתוקף לקיים רצון ה' ולא להתפעל מהעולם, אך כשהדברים באים בפועל ורואים הקושי שבדבר – מרגישים חלישות ורוצים "לברוח". צריכים לדעת שאין ליהודי ליפול ברוחו אלא להאחז ברצון ה', ובודאי ישלימו כל המלחמות בנצחון גדול; פעולת המרגלים שיתחרטו ולא ירצו לילך לא"י – לא היתה על הנשים שאמרו שאינן פוחדות, ועוד תבעו ודרשו "תנה לנו אחוזה"! כי אם ה' רוצה שילכו למקום נסיונות – צריך לעשותו! וההוראה: ישנם גברים שבצאתם "לרחוב" כדי לפעול שאלקות תהי' ניכרת שם ורואים את הנסיונות הכרוכות בזה, נרתעים ו"בורחים". על הנשים להראות את הדוגמא שלא נרתעים אלא מחליטים לקיים שליחות ה'. וזהו גם הוראה וחיזוק לאלו שעומדות להתמסר להדרכת ילדי ישראל במשך הקיץ, שתכליתה היא "כיבוש" עוד סביבה ועוד ילד יהודי לעשותם "ארץ ישראל" – שבודאי יעמדו בכל הנסיונות, ושליחות זו עוד תרומם אותן ואת המודרכים/כות.

(Continued.) Sometimes a person firmly resolves to fulfill Hashem’s will and to not be deterred by the world, but when it comes to actuality they feel weakened and want to run away from it. The lesson from the story of the spies is that a Jew should not lose heart, but should rather cling to Hashem’s will, and then he will surely emerge from all the battles with a great victory. Additionally: the spies’ report only impacted the men, in contrast to the women, who were still willing to go to Eretz Yisroel, and who asked and demanded, “Give us a portion.” The lesson is that it is up the women to set an example, by not being deterred, and by resolving to fulfill Hashem’s mission to transform the land, making Hashem visible even there. This is also a lesson and source of encouragement for those preparing to spend their summer as counselors guiding Jewish children: the goal is to “conquer” yet another Jewish child and another environment, and transform it into “Eretz Yisroel.” Not only will this not bring them down, but to the contrary: they, and those under their guidance, will be lifted up.
