כאשר ילד יהודי שואל: מנין לוקחים את הכוח הדרוש שלא להתפעל מהגויים הרבים? ויתירה מזו: ישנו גם "אויביך", היצה"ר, ששליחותו הוא להפריע לתומ"צ, ובאופן שמראה עצמו ל"אוהב" וכך מנסה לפתות את האדם – כיצד יוכל לא לשמוע בעצת היצר? – על כך בא המענה בפ' כי תצא [ראשון דפ' כי תצא] "כי תצא למלחמה על אויביך וגו'": הקב"ה אומר לבנ"י שאמנם יש מלחמה עם היצה"ר, אבל ביחד עם זה באה ההודעה שבו ברגע שהיהודי מחליט לצאת למלחמה אתו – "כי תצא למלחמה", נמצא הוא כבר "על אויביך", מעל האויב, ובמצב כזה קל לנצחו. ועוד – "ושבית שביו": גם אותם ענינים שבהם הצליח כבר היצה"ר – חוזרים לבנ"י, ועד"ז בנוגע בהמ"ק, שבקרוב ממש ה"ה חוזר מה"שבי'" בה הוא נמצא ע"ע.

When a Jewish child asks, how can I find the strength to not be intimidated by the nations and by “your enemies,” meaning the yetzer-hara, whose mission is to deter a Jew from Torah and mitzvos, which it does by presenting itself as a friend etc. – the answer appears at the beginning of parashas Ki Seitzei, “When you go out to war against your enemies…”: Hashem tells the Jewish people that although there is a war against the yetzer hara, nevertheless the moment a Jew decides to go out to war against it (“When you go out to war”), he is already “al oivecha” (“above your enemies”), such that the Jew has the upper hand and it is easy to defeat the yetzer. Moreover, “you will take captives”: anything the yetzer-hara has conquered will be returned to the Jewish people, and similarly regarding the Beis Hamikdash, which very soon will return from its “captivity.”
