ישנם המקשים: היתכן שלמרות שהחושך נעשה גדול יותר והדור קטן יותר – תובעים מאתנו לפעול דוקא עכשיו ביאת המשיח?! הנה ע"ז נאמר "אל תאמר . . שהימים הראשונים היו טובים מאלה כי לא מחכמה שאלת על זה". כיון שאותנו העמידו בדור זה, בודאי ניתנו לנו הכחות הדרושים לעבודה בדור זה – כח המס"נ! ובכח זה יכול כל א' לפעול על קהילה שלימה, להפכם ליהודים יראים ושלימים וחסידים. המענה לטענתו שעפ"י שכל לא נראית לו האפשרות לגלות בעצמו כחות אלו שיבואו לידי פועל: הגישה להעבודה צ"ל כבימי פורים באופן ד"לא ידע": שמוחלט אצלו בתוקף שכיון שהוטל עליו תפקיד זה – צריך הוא למלאותו! ואח"כ בודאי ימצא את הדרכים המתאימים – עפ"י טו"ד, "ידע" – לפעול על הקהילה כולה. ועד"ז בנוגע לעבודה עם עצמו וכו'. וכמסופר במגילה, שתגובתו הראשונה של מרדכי כאשר שמע אודות גזירת המן היתה – (לא לחבוש "צילינדער" ולעסוק בשתדלנות, אלא) "וילבש שק ואפר . . ויזעק זעקה גדולה ומרה", בהיותו ענין שנגע לו בנקודת הנפש וכו'. ורק לאח"ז באה המחשבה אודות דרכי הפעולה בדרך הטבע וכו'.

Some people ask: How is it that despite the increased darkness of exile and the diminished stature of our generation, we specifically are the ones who are expected to bring Moshiach? But the verse says, “Do not say…‘that the former days were better than these,’ for not out of wisdom have you asked concerning this.” Since we were placed in this generation, it is certain that we’ve been given the necessary strength for this task – the power of mesiras nefesh. And with this strength, every individual has the ability to influence his entire community, and to transform them into G‑d-fearing, wholesome Jews and chassidim. While one might argue that logic dictates that there’s no way for him to bring this power to actuality, the response is that one must adopt the approach of ad d’lo yada (“not knowing”), meaning absolute certainty that since this task has been placed upon him – he can and must fulfill it, even if he doesn’t understand how. And afterward he will certainly find the proper ways – with logic and reason (“knowing”) – to influence his entire community. The same applies to one’s work within himself etc. And as it says in the Megillah, when Mordechai learned about Haman’s decree, his first response wasn’t to put on a top hat and go to the royal court etc., but rather, “he put on sackcloth and ashes… and cried with a great and bitter cry” – because it affected him in the core of his soul. Only afterward did he begin thinking about what to do via natural means etc.
