הוראה ממ"ש בראשון דפ' ראה "כי לא באתם עד עתה אל המנוחה ואל הנחלה .. וישבתם בארץ .. והניח לכם מכל אויביכם מסביב": "מנוחה" מורה ששייך מצב של מלחמה אלא שכעת יש לו מנוחה מזה, משא"כ "נחלה" אין לה הפסק. והתכלית היא שגם המנוחה מאויבים תהי' לעולם ע"י שמהפכים את כל האויבים לאוהבים - "והניח לכם מכל אויביכם". ובעבודה: עוה"ז מצ"ע הוא "עלמא דפרודא" ו"נעשה אדם" לשון רבים – שישנו קס"ד שקיימות ב' מחנות - א' שעוסק בלימוד התורה ולא בבירור העולם, כמו דור המדבר, וא' שעוסק בעניני מסחר והעולם ואינו עוסק בעצמו בתורה אלא נותן צדקה שמישהו אחר ילמד תורה. מצב זה, אף שלא נלחמים זב"ז ואפי' אם מסייעים זל"ז, אי"ז מנוחה אמיתית. תכלית ירידת הנשמה למטה היא להגיע למנוחה אמיתית שהיא כשאין "אויבים" כלל וכולם במחנה אחד: דור המדבר עצמו כובש את א"י ועושה שם משכן לו ית' והבעל-עסק עצמו קובע עתים לתורה. וזהו הענין ד"גוי אחד בארץ", להמשיך את "ה' אחד" גם בענינים ארציים.

A lesson from the verse (in rishon of parashas Re’eh), “Because you have not yet come to the resting place nor to the inheritance…you must settle in the land…He will grant you respite from all your surrounding enemies”: “Resting” implies that there is a possibility of war, just that at present there is rest from it. “Inheritance,” by contrast, has no end. And the ultimate goal is that even the rest from enemies should be eternal, by transforming all the enemies into friends – “He will grant you respite from all your…enemies.” In terms of Divine service: This world by nature is the “world of separation,” and the verse states, “Let us make man…” in the plural, allowing for the mistaken notion that there are two separate camps, one camp is involved in Torah study without engaging in refining the world (like the generation of the desert), while the other is involved in business and worldly matters and does not occupy itself with Torah study (but gives tzedakah so that someone else can study Torah). Even if the two camps are not fighting one another, and even assist one another, this is still not true rest. The purpose of the soul’s descent below is to attain true rest, which is when there are no enemies at all and all belong to one camp: the generation of the desert itself conquers Eretz Yisroel and builds a Mishkan there for Hashem, and the businessman himself sets fixed times for Torah study. This is the meaning of “One nation in the land” – to draw down the reality that “Hashem is One” into even earthly matters.
