"ראש חודש", חידוש הלבנה לאחרי וע"י מיעוטה שקודם לכן, מורה על מעלת ענין העבודה, ובלשון חז"ל "לכי ומעטי עצמך", שע"י עבודת הלבנה במיעוט עצמה נעשה בה "לכי" – עלי' לדרגא נעלית יותר. ועד"ז ע"י ה"יפקד מושבך" – מלשון חסרון ומיעוט, נעשה ה"ונפקדת" (מלשון זכרון). ועד"ז ע"י ירידת הנשמה למטה ה"ה מתעלית לבחי' "מהלך". וזהו גם ענינו של "כסלו" שמורכב מב' חלקים – "כס" "לו": ע"י "כס" מלשון כיסוי והעלם, באים לשלימות הגילוי – "לו" 1) ו' פעמים ו' (כ"א מהשש מדות כפי שכלולה משש) בגימ' ל"ו 2) "אלה" (גילוי) – בגימ' ל"ו; בחודש כסלו כו"כ ימים מיוחדים: ט', י', י"ט כסלו, ימי החנוכה, שנמשכים גם לתוך חודש טבת – "ירח שהגוף נהנה מן הגוף", כל בנ"י קוראים חודש זה "חודש הגאולה". ועוד.

Synopsis
Rosh Chodesh, when the moon is renewed after previously being diminished, signifies the quality of Divine service, in the words of our Sages, [Hashem told the moon to], “Go and diminish yourself”: the moon’s service diminishing itself enables it to “go” – to reach a higher level. Similarly, through “your seat being empty (yipaked)”, you are “remembered” (“v’nifkadeta”). And similarly, as a result of the soul’s descent below, it is later elevated to become a mehalech. This is also the significance of the month of Kislev, whose name is comprised of “kes” and “36”: as a result of kes, which means covered and hidden, we reach the ultimate revelation, represented by the number 36, which is 6 times 6 (each of the six attributes comprised of all six). Moreover, 36 is the gematria of the word Eileh (“These”), which connotes revelation. The month of Kislev is full of special days: 9 Kislev, 10 Kislev, 19 Kislev, the days of Chanukah, which also extend into Teves – “the month when the body takes pleasure in another body,” and the entire Jewish people call this month “the month of redemption.”
