איתא בספרים ש"חנוכה" הוא מלשון חינוך (שאז חינכו את המקדש). ענין החינוך הוא שכדי להבטיח ש"גם כי יזקין לא יסור ממנה" ויוכל לעמוד מול הנסיונות וכו', צריך להתחיל את החינוך כבר "חנוך לנער". ולכן השתדלו חכמי ישראל ביותר והשקיעו כחות גדולים ביותר על חינוך בני ובנות ישראל שיהי' על טהרת הקודש, ונאבקו שלא לוותר על שום פרט! וככל שגוברת ההתנגדות והמלחמה נגד יהדות, כך צריכים לחזק את המלחמה, לא רק שלא לוותר ולהסכים ל"פשרה", אלא אדרבה – להלחם במסנ"פ אפ' על פרטים כאלו שאינם נוגעים כ"כ לכאו', "חוט השערה", שבשעת שלום אולי לא היו נלחמים עליהם, כי יתכן שזהו חוט השערה שעליו אמחז"ל שממנו צומחת כל מציאותו של היצה"ר! ובפרט כאשר רוצים לחנך את הדור הצעיר על פשרות, הנה מ"שריטה" קטנה זו שעושים בנשמתם בצעירותם עלול לגדול יהודי בעל-מום ר"ל! רואים עכשיו במוחש שההליכה בדרך הפשרות גרמה לאיבוד הנוער וכו'. ולכן חוב קדוש שלא לוותר בזה אפי' כחוט השערה, ולחזק החינוך על טהרת הקודש.

It says in sefarim that Chanukah comes from the word chinuch. Chinuch (which also means education) means to initiate and train; when you “Educate the child to child according to his way,” that ensures that “even when he grows old, he will not depart from it,” and he will be able to withstand the challenges and trials he will face for the rest of his life. But this must begin early, when he is “a child.” This is why our Sages invested so much effort into Jewish education, to imbue Jewish boys and girls with purity and holiness, equipping them with the tools to fight all opposition and to not compromise on any detail. As the battle against Yiddishkeit intensifies, we must strengthen the fight – and fight with mesiras-nefesh even over what might otherwise seem like something minor. During ordinary times, such issues might not have warranted fighting over, but in these circumstances, it is possible that this “strand of hair” is the one the Sages referred to, from which the entire existence of the yetzer hara grows. This is particularly critical when it comes to educating the youth, because education is like planting a tree: even a tiny scratch on the seed can end up impairing the whole tree when it gets bigger, chas v’shalom. We now see that the path of compromise has led to many young people leaving the path, Rachmana litzlan; therefore it is a sacred duty not to yield even to the slightest degree, and to strengthen pure Jewish education.
