מצות "פסח שני" באה ע"י פעולתן של ישראל שתבעו "למה נגרע". ולכאו' תביעה זו של האנשים (שהיו גדולי ישראל) שלא יכלו להקריב קרבן פסח במועדו ממשה רבינו – תמוהה. דממה נפשך: אם רצונו של ה' שיקיימו את המצוה בודאי יצוה למשה לומר להם זאת, ואם משה לא יאמר להם מאומה – פירוש הדבר שאינם צריכים לקיימה! אלא, אע"פ שבכל ענין של יהדות צ"ל ה"ויאמינו בה' ובמשה עבדו", אבל בעניני יראת שמים שמרגיש שזה נוגע לו וחסר לו – עליו לדרוש זאת ולא "לישען . . על אבינו שבשמים"... וזו הוראה הן ל"פשוט שבפשוטים" שיכול לחשוב "מי אני ומה אני" לבוא בתביעה... – הנה למרות ריחוק הערך בין אנשים אלו לה' – באו אליו בתביעה ודרישה והיא נתקבלה, ועל ידם ניתוסף מצוה לכל בנ"י! והן ל"ראשיכם שבטיכם" שיכול לחשוב "מה חסר לי שאבוא לטעון 'למה נגרע'" – עליו לדעת שהסימן של "תלמידי חכמים" הוא ש"ילכו מחיל אל חיל"!

Synopsis
The mitzvah of Pesach Sheini came about through the initiative of Jews (leaders of the generation) who were unable to bring the Pesach Rishon and demanded, “why should we be excluded.” Seemingly, their demand is puzzling: if Hashem wanted them to perform a Korban Pesach, He would surely have commanded them to do so. And if Hashem didn’t command them to do so, seemingly that shows that it isn’t necessary. The answer is that although one must always “believe in Hashem and in Moshe His servant,” and do what Hashem says, however, when it comes to matters of fear of Heaven, when one feels he is lacking and it really bothers him – here he must demand what he is looking for, and not simply “rely…on our Father in Heaven.” This is a lesson for Jews of every level: the “simplest of the simple” might think, who am I to come and make demands of Hashem – but in the story of Pesach Sheini, Jews did come with a demand, and it was accepted, and through them a new mitzvah came about for all Jews. On the other hand, the “heads of your tribes” might think, what am I lacking that I should come and demand, ‘Why should we be excluded” – but the truth is that the very symbol of being a Torah scholar is the desire to constantly grow and advance from strength to strength.
